i am a fan of mercola.com which is a holistic information website that has lots of great info for someone like me. recently I read some articles on Leptin by ron rosedale, M.D. that I thought made perfect sense.
to summarize it simplistically, the body primarily burns either sugar or fat for energy. If you have both fat and sugar in your blood stream from the meal you just ate, the body will use the sugar for energy and store the fat. It will also store the extra sugar as fat.
you get sugar in your blood (glucose) from eating sugar (sucrose, fructose etc) and starches (rice, wheat, all grains, potatoes etc). So, really most of us are getting a whopping dose of sugar at each meal. ( this also raises insulin and leads to inflammation, but I'm not going to discuss that right now).
because the body is designed to PREFERENTIALLY burn sugar, if you eat like this over a period of time, your ABILITY to burn fat gets weaker and weaker. What happens, is eventually you hardly burn fat at all, which results in obviously gaining fat, also poorer sleep because when you run out of sugar at night, the body will breakdown muscle to convert it to sugar, which includes elevating your Cortisol levels, which wakes you up.
the other major thing I want to mention is that when they have done studies on people who live past 100, the one thing they have in common is low fasting glucose and leptin (leptin is a hormone produced by fat to sign the brain to eat less). Our modern diets produce very high fasting insulin and leptin...and this leads to most modern disease processes.
bottom line is im using rosedale diet, and people have been saying they have been burning fat like a teenager again! This diet will result in low fasting insulin and leptin can , and normalize most blood test values. This will reverse many of the lifestlye diseases that are killing americans and canadians
the really great thing about this diet is it is for max health, longevity and will allow you to get very lean fairly effortlessly. By EFFORTLESS, I mean that for the first time in my life i have no starch or sweet cravings (miracle!). I can stay on this way of eating because, I can have people wave pasta or sweets under my nose and its no big deal, because i don't crave them at all.
So, if you are looking to get lean, healthy and maximize your lifespan, check it out. i must add that the paleo diet works just as well.
