It also is a comfort thing ...taking as much tension as I can for one hour.Then I take it off ,massage my foreskin and balls for a couple of minutes which relieves the burning which happens in the last part of each hour.
Then I go right back in for another hour.
Also when the tension becomes too light or the going is too easy I add a small bar or unscrew the bars at the bottom for more tension.

I starting extending at max. tension that I can cope with, like you. I wear in this setup it till I the 3rd tension mark is visible, or simply when I gained 0.5" FSL. If so, I add 0.5" bars to the extender and repeat the process described earlier.
I vary tension so my body doesn't get used to the same tension and in order to cement to a certain degree.
I try to go around 2-4h per session and wear it up and down, with emphasis on the downward position.
