May depend upon how new to extending you are, glans size, glans shape, if split rings are in use, amount of lube, amount of "pull" / grams of tension, how far in you are inserted to begin with.
Number of pumps used is always a variable amongst users; it can get very "iffy".
I always aim for 10" hg to pull on the outer side of the diaphragm, which in turn is needed to pull in my glans/shaft combined with my pushing my shaft further in.
A new diaphragm is stiffer & will need more, a stretched/used diaphragm, will be easier to use, and require less vacuum.
