This is optional. I got this to work without needing to stretch my rubber stop but heating it hot water and stretching it some will make it easier.
For the pump to work you don't need to have it covering the whole valve just enough to cover the 4 holes on top. Just line up the rubber on top of the holes and put the vac on and pump. It takes a moment to get the cordination down, I like to put the stop over the holes while I have it in the pump. After the first time it stays in place sealed to until I release the pressure. It takes only 10 seconds to realign and pump once you get it down.
Yeah. I no longer use the old idea of leaving the adapter on, but instead I just hold the adapter and wine vac part on there while I pump just like you said enuff to form a seal and pull a little more water out and maintain a high level of suction.
