When I started hanging I started with 2.5 lbs and hung to get comfortable and make adjustments accordingly. About 2-3 weeks in I was using 5 lbs and hanging for at least 3 sets, if I could handle more and had the time I hung for as many as 8 sets with one or two at lighter weigth to end the session. Those end sets were about 10 minutes or so at most. For most of the time I hung I used between 7.5 and 10 lbs as this seemed to be my sweet spot, and I could be very comfortable hanging with this weight BTC. I did towards the end of my hanging stint get up to 17.5 lbs, and I hung a few sets at 20 lbs but I was so concerned with slippage that these sets lasted maybe 10-15 minutes at max. Most of my .5" came in the first 3-4 months of hanging when I could get in and hang consistently for several sets. When I started my new job, along with school, I knew I wasn't going to be able to hang like I would want and need to so I sold my starter. I want another .5" in length and a bit more than .75" in girth before I'm done.
You may consider looking into pumping too if you're looking for length and girth at the same time. You have to include manuals with pumping though to "cement" the gains from the pump, but I've heard it can be a very good method for gaining in both directions simultaneously.
