I think the background was that her ex had been trying to get back together with her unsuccessfully and they were trying to stop him from calling/texting her all the time, it was done in a kind of half joking fashion.

That said, it was definitely a pretty fucked up scenario and I am definitely not friends with that guy. In fact he was probably one of the worst people I've ever met. He was a trust fund kid due a massive inheritance who looked a bit like an uglier Seth Rogen and treated everyone like shit.
