I use a large word combo bicycle padlock and a little athletic prewrap around my shaft

The lock can also be used as a hanging method where you can add as many locks as you like. So something like the [words=http://TLCTugger.com/MOS]VLC[/words] with locks hung off it might be a good alternative for more weight.
