Basically you pop a golfball, a stress ball (I like best), a sponge, or some other soft item to take up some of the negative space in the tube. It allows for faster and greater expansion for guys who feel there is too much length in the tube.

Have you tried taking them apart and cleaning the valve mechanism? This can become clogged and pressure leaks. When you say rubber gasket what are you talking about?
