I measure the same way. I am a little overweight and have an upward curve so the side works best for me. When I finish losing the weight, the side measure will match up with a top measure anyway so what's the big deal?
 
There's so many wannbe's over there, that's one of the main reasons I came over here. There's some dipshit old man who goes by "Horsehung" who claims he's around 11 inches by 7 erect and 7+ soft. Everyone kept asking for pix, so finally he posts some grainy pix where he looks 8x6 AT BEST, of course with no ruler. He is the biggest prick I've read on any Penis Enlargement board, always commenting how big he claims to be and making remarks to that effect. Very little to offer other than reminding everyone of his self-proclaimed size.

Anyway is good to measure, aslong as you do it the sameway eachtime....he's doing fine. The accurate measurment you say, in other words the common and more accepted BP stat over the base into the pubic region! or getting to it from the side! Those are mostly acepted as 'correct' methods, and science uses them so I guess thats why. He can use whatever method he likes, doesnt bother me...hes large and has done well....very good for him but if he were to compare himself to most males in studys he couldnt, because his method isnt the common more widely accepted one? catch my drift? aint saying it wrong, there is no wrong method [use what you want, as long as you use it consistant] but if your gunna be useing it to compare and participate in studys etc etc than the common method is needed, and it isnt in use in these pictures.

You're huge, no doubt, but like the others have mentioned the standard placement of the ruler is along the top of the shaft. Along the side will give you an extra 1/4 or 1/2".
 
Maybe it is just me but if you moved the ruler to the center you would be the exact same size ?:(
