You are correct on using the screws to fine tune between the lines. I am not sure how to determine how much tension you would have other than to estimate but you could assume the measurement method you mentioned
 
The tension on my SG seems to work well for me. I started off at the minimum as it suggested and found myself moving up pretty quickly. I have been able to add the 2 shorter bars and will likely have to move up to one of the long bars in about a week as the tension starts off good but loosens during the day and I have to turn the adjustment screws multiple times during that day

Have you made gains from using the extender? I tried using the SG many times in the past but it was too stressful for me to use.
