Im trying to gain muscle mass onto my frame, but at the same time I also want to shed some pounds around my stomach.. I just bought some weight gainer that is very low in fat, around 650 calories and packs 50 g's of protein.. is this good for what I want? Im planning on taking it for maybe one or two of my 6 meals a day.. I was thinking one glass after my workout and maybe one for the last meal of my day b4 bed as its whey protein and I heard its good at these two times...

Any help would be greatly appreciated- thanks ahead guys.

Edit::: Also, I get about 20-30 minutes of cardio in a day and weight train every other day..
 
You can't really put on muscle and lose fat at the same time, very well. Putting on mass requires that you consume more food, while losing fat requires you to consume less. Your best bet is to lose the fat that you want to lose before going on a mass building program. JMO...
 
Yeah, i was thinking that earlier.. I heard of guys bulking up first and then cutting down.. would that would that work for me? Or is it just a preference, or would my way that im doing things now work out for me? HELP?!?!
 
I gotta disagree with sikdogg, at least partially, sorry dude.
He's right that mass-building and fat reduction are mutually exclusive...that's just the way biology works...gotta live with it.

BUT, if you're not grotesquely overfat, (anything less than 25% bodyfat) then your best bet is to put on some of that beautiful, fat burning, thermic, functional muscle mass.

As you put on muscle mass, your bodyfat, as a mean percentage, will drop, even though the actual "amount" of fat stays the same.
HOWEVER,
MUSCLE BURNS FAT.
So that when you choose to lose, the fat that is, more muscle means it will be easier and faster to burn the fat. Some guys even find that a "fat burning" phase is unnecessary and all they need to do is cut back 10-20% on their carb calories to burn fat after the "bulking phase" is complete.
As far as the protein; 50 grams in about an 8-10 hour period is about all your body can convert, the rest will be pissed out, turned into urea or stored as fat. And one important thing; protein uses up water in a 4:1 ratio- you need 4 grams of water for every gram of protein, at a minimum or you risk putting an extreme strain on your kidneys. So keep up the water intake !!

Building muscle and losing fat is usually done seperate. It is possible but not very effective if you are trying to do both at the same time. You will be more successful with doing one or the other. If you have less than 20% body fat I would say bulk up and put on more muscle. Throw away the weight gainer, that stuff is crap, stick to basic whey. In order to have your abs show you need bodyfat percentage of like 6%. The only real way to build a lot of muscle and burn a lot of fat at the same time is to take steroids. what is your weight/height?
 
Thanks guys, i really apreciate all the help as I really only know what I can figure out myself..

I was thinking of just taking the weight gainer at night as I heard that that is when you really need a protein that will break down slow to help with muscle recovery when you sleep.

I am about 6" tall and 180 lbs, roughly. Im not fat by any means, but I mean I still want to burn off the excess fat that I have in the spare tire area.. You know the stomach and lovehandle area. Couldnt tell you what my body fat percentage is.

More suggestions would be greatly appreciated as most of this is all pretty new to me.. Not that Ive never worked out or that I have no real knowlege of staying fit.. I was about 160 lbs with super low body fat about 1.5 years ago, but I know I wasnt healthy and I know if i ate better and smarter I would have been jack diesel. I also never lifted before seriously.. I always trained as a boxer would and used body weight excercises to help keep me trim, toned, fast, and powerful. Now though, I want to be bigger, but still cut up.

whey or weight gainer isn't goign to help that much for sleeping. you should take casein protein before beed, it lasts like 7 hours, whey lasts an hour. so unless you plan on waking up every hour when you sleep to take a shake.
you weigh 180 lbs? you are going to need 270 grams of protein a day. make sure you eat a lot of carbs too, like twice as much as you do of protein and lots of good fats from veggies and nutts.
 
Damn! really? Im def. gonna have to up my food intake then.. Ive only been eating about my weight in protein daily...
 
1 gram of protein per pound of body weight is just maintenance. to get bigger you need at least 1.5 grams per pound.
 
As I said before, I think you should bulk first then cut...especially if your just starting out. And try to stay away from those really high rep routines. I got a link I posted here before if and when you look to cut.

You should be able to see the outline of your abs at about 13% at 10% they will be very defined,6% is approaching competition condition.

The same rules apply when taking steroids bulk or cut
 
Well right now I can see my abs if I flex, just not the bottom ones so much.. thats why i know i want to lose some fat.. Ive got a bit of a spare tire from partying and living life in excess a bit..

I dont know if its that Im older now or what, but Ive noticed that chicks dig me way more now since ive gotten a bit bigger than when i was super fit but smaller.. Might be that chicks just dig bigger guys? At least most of the time anyway..

Older women seem to prefer bigger built men but younger women teenagers seem to go for the skinny brad pit look.

Ok, you want to lose some pounds, then lose the weight gainer immediately and change the way you eat. You need to go down from 6 meals to about 3-4 meals, but they have to be healthy meals (egg whites, fruit, oatmeal). Don't change your lifting schedule, instead intensify it if you want to get lean. After you reach the weight desired, then start taking the weight gainer to begin adding muscle to your frame.

Why cut back to 3-4?
 
Well, Ill give you guys a bit of early progress and how ive altered my routine. I still eat around 5-6 meals a day as I believe that this is better than eating 3-4 as it nullifies any cravings I might get for shitty food- this is because I stay in a constant stasis where Im never overful (dont stuff myself when I eat because Im not starving by the time I eat) and I count the 2-3 protein shakes I have a day as meals (Low carb shakes, no more weight gainer). My diet is pretty healthy- it really astounded me how easy it has been to go from fresh out of college and eating pretty much anything- I would pig out at night a lot and I just realized I cant remember the last time I was really hungry and wolfed down a bunch of food before bed :) , to now, where I eat 6 solid meals- I eat a can of tuna daily about 50 grams of chicken somehow prepared and I try to go very very easy on the carbs. I dont go crazy with my diet and I dont deprive myself of something if I really want it, but i rarely ever really want to stray from my diet :) .


I lift every other day still and have noticed a definate increase in strength- I am very pleased with my progress and I have noticed major changes in the way my body looks, especially in the past few days. All of my muscles- especially my arms and shoulders- have become much bigger and more defined and I am noticing my shirts a getting tighter instead of looser on me.

Thank god I have a mirror! Not because Im vain, well maybe a little, but because if I went by the scale I would think that Ive made next to no progress. I have stayed at around 185 lbs, losing only about 4-5 lbs. I acredit this to my burning off fat all over my body and it being replaced with muscle at the same time- this seems to be a comfortable weight for me to maintain, and ill most likely stay in the 180-185 region- we'll see where all this work takes me..

Supplements I take are: Tribulus, multi, arginine, orthinine, flaxseed oil, ZMA, and melatonin (to help me sleep.) I also take propecia daily (well 2.5 mg of finasteride every other day). I sometimes pop a caffeine pill in the morning, after my first meal- only caffeine I consume throughout the day.

I also drink tons of water throughout the day, and I still sweat my ass of beating the shit outta the heavy bag, doing pushups and situps, and stretching daily (not just my penis anymore).

I also do scalp exercises daily and they have pretty much halted my hair loss- I chopped off all my hair yesterday, and I am happy to say that I cant even notice myself that I lost any hair- its thinner for sure, but no one can notice and the hair thats up there now is not going anywhere LMAO . The propecia I think has helped in this too, but I have been taking it for around 2 years and I only saw the stoppage of hair loss when I started doing SE daily.

The way I look at it, Im not on a diet- I changed my life. And I feel great.
 
You cant cut and bulk at the same time unless your juicing.

Stop wasting your money on the high priced full of sugar weight gainers. Make you own home weight gainer

2 scoop whey
1 tbsp natty pb
1 tbsp fish or flax oil
1 cup raw oats
1-2 cups skim milk

800+ calories plus. Its natural, its food, better for you, you know what your putting in it and its a fraction of the cost of a weight gainer you'd buy over the counter
