I use one of those dollar cock rings it works fine.

You're right but when you do get the bigger size put it on beforehand either way, just make sure it's not too tight when you're pumping with it on
 
Cock rings are very inexpensive so to get something that is really good you would spend no more than $10.

I'm looking for advice on what I'm doing and how to improve it.

Nothing much happened tbh.

Then one day it slipped off around 5mins and after reapplying I pumped up much better - so by accident I found sets. I now do 3-4 5min sets a day with no strap and I let it hang under its own weight.

I've also been using a penismaster pro for 2months strapping myself to the left or right for 4-5hrs a day.

I'm noticing I'm a bit thicker with the pumping sets but no noticeable gains in length yet.

Where am I going wrong?

You need to add manual girth exercises to your session if you want girth gains. Add SSJ.
