I'll be the first nerd to chime in. I listen to lots of 20th century orchestral type stuff. Some recent favorites are Ives, Webern, Gorecki, Varese, Bartok (fellow Hungarian), Stravinsky (of course), Holst, and Veress (also Hungarian).
Some late 19th century stuff that I listen to sometimes include Mahler, RacHydromaxaninov, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky. But that's too tonal for me to listen to very much.
Some film composers I really like (this is my major, BTW) are Howard Shore (LOTR, Silence of the Lambs, went to my college), Elliot Goldenthal (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Final Fantasy, Frida), Danny Elfman (Nightmare Before Christmas, almost all Tim Burton films, Batman 1&2, Spiderman 1&2), Hans Zimmer (Gladiator), James Horner (Mask of Zorro, The Last Samurai), and of course, John Williams (Star Wars, almost every Spielberg film).
I also listen to some rock. Radiohead, Coldplay, twothirtyeight, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Taken From You, and Denison Marrs...yup, that's about all for rock. And I really love Bjork. She has some fantastic stuff.
I used to be a huge jazz fan. It's pretty rare for me to listen to it now, but sometimes. Miles Davis is my favorite. A few others are good but Miles is the best, especially his work with Gil Evans. And his quintet stuff. After Bitches Brew it was all downhill.
I think I've typed enough about music. :D
