When I stretch down, I sometimes start off in a squat and then slowly raise my legs into a standing position. About halfway up (knees still bent) I feel extra stretch on my ligs (not 'pain' necessarily, but a slight discomfort). I don't know what it is exactly, but may be something similar to what you are experiencing.
