I'd go by the first image, just so I can see my head over my thumb and pointer finger.

Right. I used to do it as in the first image too. Then I realized that, if my girl was to grab my dick she'd probably be in front of me, facing me, and, therefore, her hands would be more in a position similar to the second image.
So my goal now is to get my two hands around my shaft as in picture number 2 and still be able to see my glans
