Smegma consists of skin oils, dead epithelial cells shed by the tissues of the penis, accumulated moisture and bacteria. A build up of bacteria and dead tissue cells under the foreskin will produce a very pungent and an unpleasant odor. Infection will occur in an area of accumulated sweat, dirt and bacteria if unkept. It is very important to keep the area under the foreskin free of debris because bacteria thrives in isolated warm places with plenty of moisture.
