I usually start jelqing completely flaccid build up a 30% erection level and do 300 wet jelqs (I'm still in the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/forum/penis-enlargement-newbie-forum/1597-dlds-first-routine-i-gained-2-inches-with-this-routine-full-tutorial.html]newbie routine[/words]).

Is jelqing from a flaccid state effective? or the penis definitely needs to be 80% to see gains?

do semi erect, if your getting erect that let you know that your doing something right cause your unit is filling with blood. BUT maybe your grip isnt tight enough and it just fells like rubbing to your dick and that MIGHT be why your getting rock hard. If you get rock hard take a quick break. I would stay around 70-80%.
 
if you get rock hard, jelq really fast and pump as much blood as you can, then jelq one hard time and clamp with your hand at the base. then take your free hand and squeeze the blood from your head into the shaft. you can either hold it, or do fast squeezes. either way, it's a really good girth exercise, and when you release you won't be as hard.
 
The exercise dmoney described is a horse440 squeeze, and this exercise is nothing for newbies!!

The higher your errectiongrade ist, the more effective jelqing is for your girth. But as a newbie you should start with a lower errection grad (like 70%). I do them 100% errect...

9_inches, how do you manage the turkey neck problem? When I jelq, I invariably seem to get a hold on some of the scrotal skin (with the hand that is at the base of the penis) and when I move upwards, that skin moves up too.

Just because he is getting an erection doesn't imply he is doing good. Just about all of us got them when we first started trying to jelq. After a few sessions you won't get the erection as you will be more comfortable doing the exercise as an exercise, not masturbating.

This is already happening to me. It's actually starting to feel like a workout as opposed to me just playing with my genitals.
