I can't say I have one song, but I'm sure some of you all might. I think it might be fun seeing some of our picks.

I have to say though one of my favorite "bar" songs that I love to hear, in fact I have plenty of their albums, but "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors is probably up there in my top 3 rock songs. I just want to grab a mic and "Let it rooooooollllll baby roll!"

"Black Dog" by Zeppelin is a great bar song, imo. "Jack and Diane" by Mellencamp is a great bar song b/c everybody knows the words to it.

Honorable mention: "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC; "Sweet Home Alabama" by Skynard.

I love the Doors, too, esp. "Riders on the Storm," "Roadhouse Blues," and "The End"

As cheesy as it sounds, one of my all-time favorite songs is "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds, off the Breakfast Club soundtrack.

'Sweet Home Alabama' is probably my numero uno. I also love 'Yankee Rose' by David Lee Roth. 'American Woman' is kickass, too, although I actually like the Lenny Kravitz cover version better than the original one. Oh yeah, and 'Smoke on the Water' by Deep Purple is right up there, too.

Of the more recent rock (recent as in 90s to now) tunes I especially dig 'Space Lord' by Monster Magnet, and as "mainstream" as it may be, 'Higher' by Creed always gets me exhilirated.

July Morning by Uriah Heep hits home for some reason as does I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home (I think that's the name of it anyway lol) by Grand Funk Railroad. But Nothing beats Voodoo Chile by Jimmi Hendrix. If you can't feel that song...your heart stopped long ago.

Speaking of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan's rendition of Voodoo Child is about as close as anyone else can get to sounding remotely like Hendrix's Voodoo Child. With Vaughan you can just hear the imitation and skill as opposed to Hendrix's all out passion and talent...when it's pouring out of you like sweat that's when you know it can't get better. That's why Voodoo Chile (different song) is my number one rock song. No one else can play it.

One more thing...today's music in terms of rock related music it seems that no one can write or wants to write great melodies anymore. Back in the day you could sing with the song and remember it for the words...not just the hook and chorus...everything...That's probably why I can't really put a recent rock song anywhere near my top 5 or even 20. I mean even if I were to put a Van Halen song in the top 20 it'd still be 15 years or so old. Damn is it me or is that sad or am I just not listening to the right rock? There are lots of genres now that you could easily just say it's rock...fuck the it's this-this-this- and this rock...no I don't have time to say the whole fucking genre's name when i'm trying to come up with a band's name or song. Fuck that. Drop the damn pseudo name tag divisions of music. What is this the fucking NCAA? This just started to piss me off...I'll be done in a minute. I hate that I don't find any music now to be even close to the music of old. Those songs were great then, great now and it's because they transcend...bridge generations...bring about memories of life and times...shit...what the fuck happened? It has to be image...and I hate to say it but MTV as good as it was for music it was ten times worse. Maybe it was inevitable too, but MTV fucked music and crippled the potential talents of the future...ah well I'm starting to sound fifty eight years old, fuck. I just can't believe I'm still up after working 9 hours and being up for about the last 32 hours...Damn I'm going insane.

No Quarter - Tool (Led Zeppelin cover)

BlacK Dog - Zeppelin........Damn Str8t Texan

Over the Hills and far away - Zeppelin

The Road Behind - Gwar (AS worthy as it gets)

Riders on the Storm - Doors

Cemetery Gates - Pantera

All Old Rock blow everything else outta the water.....

Jerk Off - Opiate - Tool. Just for the genuine agression.

Im not saying all new musics bad, just the brunt of it

I totally agree with this. I'm a music student in London and it seems to me that most music nowadays is all image based bullshit made for kids.

Where did the emotion go? Now it's all 'I'm so fuckin' cool everyone look at me.'. Fuck that. I have been writing and performing music in England for about 4 years now. I'm 21 and play the drums. Influences. Tool, King Crimson, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd, Tortoise, Massive Attack, Frank Zappa, etc. Anything with emotion really. There are so many shite bands around now, it makes me sick. Many of them have no idea how to play their instruments but they have the right image so they make money in the industry. I however can play my instrument well and struggle to make enough to survive.

Sorry to go on but it really pisses me off. It seems that talent has been exchanged for image in the music industry. Thanks MTV.

Monster Magnet: Space Lord
KISS: God of Thunder
Black Label Society/Zakk Wylde: Spoke in the Wheel
Lita Ford/Ozzy: Close Your Eyes Forever
AC/DC: Whole Lotta Rosie

Honorable mention to Bonnie Tyler: Total Eclipse of the Heart

Does anyone know if its true that Meatloaf does the male vocals in Total Eclipse and Bonnie Tyler does the female part in Paradise By The Dashboard Lights?

Well, I have to agree that MTV has fucked up music for evermore. The last "great" band, imo, was Nirvana. Kurt worte music/lyrics with passion, which is what I think is missing today. Today's music, across the genre spectrum suffers from an extreme lack of inspiration, sincerity, emotion. Country isn't country... what happened to Don Williams, Merle Haggard, Waylon and Willie? Rock damn sure isn't rock... even Metallica, who I recently saw in concert, is, honestly, uninspiring these days. I thought Creed's first album, My Own Prison, had some good stuff, but nothing to whip me into a frenzy. Blame it on my generation... X - apathy permeates.

Reading these posts here made me think of a couple more: "The Wall" by Pink Floyd and "When Doves Cry" by Prince. I love Prince's older stuff, up to and including "Diamonds and Pearls."

Ah Prince is the Shit.

The Isley Brothers, Al Green, fuck I know the last two ain't rock, but still you made me think of some music.

I think the reason image has taken over is the individualism or the nature of America's society. It's all about the Benjamins right? Well, corporate suits saw this image thing and ran with it and so did everyone else. I'll bet a good majority of musicians actually write music in order to get on MTV or just appear on TV. When music turned into an actual industry the poeticism and artistry began to die and we began to feed on the emptiness we got to listen to on the radio or see in the video. What happened was apathy that is for sure. That is the only thing that has stuck with music that has to do with a reflection of times and society. I don't hear anyone really speaking to the issues in the world or even our country. Where's the recognition of significant matters anymore? Shit, Marvin Gaye...another one that sang about things other than himself. All I hear is my girl this and my boyfriend that...he don't love me no more....he cheated on me....left me...I'm a stud...I got the riches and the bitches...I I I me me me...fuck you...I can see your ass just fine and I see your riches and bitches now what have you to say now that you have the stage? I just think when you have the stage you should act as a sage at least in some respect. I mean if you have a personal story to tell tell it but make it meaningful and in good taste...don't try and shock people all the time I mean I like Lil Kim but fuck she's got a mouth on her lol and Usher even too the songs are all the same...I like his music don't get me wrong, but If you got it bad, was played over about five or six other songs of his it might actually not make enough difference to notice there are five or six other songs being played at the same time...there's just an excess of people who just don't get it. I mean musicians are entertainers but they don't have to put themselves out there to front some image. I don't care what you wear or how you talk, but music in general just doesn't feel good anymore. It's like everything is a downer even if it's upbeat. It's almost like each song is a commercial or endorser for an anxiety or anti-depressant pill. It's as if no one can step back from their own reality or even write about a different time. Most lyrics seem to concern that musician's current state or reflect their most recent experience. Listen to any song in the last 5 years and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Anyone listen to Slipknot, or Soul Fly or Nothingface? I don't mind them. I actually prefer Staind to these bands, but I have albums from each...

Can't say that I do (not that I dislike them, but I just haven't heard enough of their songs to be able to decide whether I like em or not), but I LOVE Mudvayne. People often label it as a "heavier and more bass oriented Tool", which is a bit of an unfair classification if you ask me. I think they have a very unique sound, and they are one of the most profound lyricists out there on the metal scene. Another label they get slapped with (again, unjustly IMO) is the "nu-metal" one. "Math Metal" would be more fitting since they employ crazy time changes in their songs. I play bass, and most of their tracks are impossibly complex and way too difficult for me.

Man, I just noticed you brought up Usher in there. Don't even get me started on that clown... jesus chirst, the guy looks and hops around like a trained monkey in the videos, and his music and lyrics might have just as well been written by a simian. I hate his fucking guts- he's a disgrace EVEN to MTV and the modern so-called RnB scene. LMAO

lol, I wouldn't mind getting the trim he gets though...

As for labels yeah...it's basically people trying to separate themselves from others particularly those who don't play music or know anything about it...funny though how some people like to define themselves by the music they listen to in an attempt to be different or unique as opposed to just listening to the music and living their own life regardless...how can you be a unique group? lol I guess you could be, but it's a funny way to think about it...Where do you get sheets from?? I know of a few but usually they aren't exactly right you know so you have to guess...I don't play but I understand a bit when it comes to reading music...my dad plays bass too.

Just seen Slipknot in concert last month, with Killswitch Engaged and Unearth. Slipknot was loud but I was expecting a better show from them. I play a little guitar and alot of the new metal bands I see never do any solo's. I love guitar solo's, seen Zakk Wylde shred a 10 min solo front stage center a little while ago and I'm going to to see Velvet Revolver next week. Slash is one of the best players there is.
