Ok guys i am trying to bulk up i am denfinetly an ectomorph although i think my metabolism is slowing down as i am noticing i am filling out slightly now i am interested in whey protein and protein shakes i dont know much about them. what can you guys tell me about the protein shakes and will just eating high calorie foods drinking protein shakes and doing a light work out build me up slightly say like 10-20kg in a couple of months? and then once i have bulked do a hard workout as i will be conditioned from the light workouts?

i dont plan on gaining alot of weight just a little and keeping it so dont reccommend a full on bodybuilder workout that some of you guys may be doing.

thanks to anyone who can help.

I don't understand why you want to do "light workouts" if you're trying to bulk up. Doesn't make a bit of sense to me. Gaining lean mass is NOT easy, despite what you may have read. You'll have to bust your ass in the gym as well as the kitchen. 10-20 kg of LBathmate is a significant gain, especially for a few months' time. Light workouts won't cut it. I'd recommend something like Chad Waterbury's "Big Boy Basics," here:

For protein powder, whey is good to have, but it isn't the be-all and end-all that some companies make it out to be. You need slow protein as well, such as casein. Biotest makes a good whey/casein blend MRP, but it can get a bit pricey (although if money is no object, go for it). I use a custom blend from www.proteinfactory.com (click "The Lab") of 40% micellar casein, 30% milk protein isolate, and 30% whey isolate. It's like $40 or so for 5 pounds, and tastes pretty darn good. Post-workout it's optimal to have hydrolyzed whey, high GI carbs, and BCAAs. Surge is exactly that, and tastes really good (hydrolyzed whey tastes terrible, I tried making a custom blend using this and I can't even drink it). It's kind of pricey, but worth it IMO, probably especially when bulking.

ok then i see what you are saying so how can i gain mass not lean mass but just fat mass not to much to make it unhealthy as i am skinny anyway and a little bit of mass isnt going to make it unhealthy. should i just try to get in alot of calories each day and do pushups crunches and sittups to keep me exercised and slightly fit is this possible or is weight gain a black/white matter.

black - do nothing stay scrawny continue living as i am.

or white - lift heavy eat heavy be heavy.

their is no grey area? were you can gain a little weight be in a moderate state of fitness and pretty much be in between and ectomorph and an endomorph?

Being an ectomorph myself who regularly consumes 6000-8000 calories every day and lifts 3 times/week as well as keeps up with a hefty swimming regimen, I can tell you that if you have always been an ecotmorph, that won't change much.

If you have had trouble packing on mass quickly in the past, then you don't have to worry about being heavy if you lift and eat heavy.

Why do you want to be in a "moderate state of fitness" and only "slightly fit?" Sounds like laziness to me.

If you want to gain fat mass just eat as much trash food as you can. If you want both (which is what you'll get when bulking, no matter what), you've got to eat a lot of quality protein, fats, and carbs. And if you're not working out heavily you'll most likely only gain fat.

ok thats cool i see it is hard work to gain a little weight and stay fit im only young so when i move out of my parents place and am making a decent amount of money i will work on bulking up just at the moment i dont have the resources or time to focus on bulking.
