If you must go up on pressure, go harder on SSJ squeezes and bending-flexing to take advantage of the higher vacuum pressure creeping for the internal expansion. Once you are pushing hard with SSJ, creep the 5inHg to 30 seconds and then down on the next pump set. Take advantage of the harder SSJ set.

With the hand position for the SSJ, it seems difficult to get your hand right down to the base, and most of the time, I seem to be working on the top half of the shaft. Is that right?

No, one or the other. Dual application is too much. If I use MOS Red to super charge the cells I use that as priming the tissues with heat. If you want to use heat application, use a blowing heater to keep your tissues malleable constantly. No need, but just an idea.
So maybe rice sock before, and red light after?
