weight loss please help ! drinking beer & losing weight,is it possible

ok im going to be honest here,im 5'10 and i weight 16 stone (224 lbs)
my ideal weight for my size is 13 stone, now to keep this simple my daily diet consists of a 300 calorie breakfast of fruit and fible cereals or poached eggs on wholemeal bread and a cup of tea always with skimmed milk, now my next meal isnt eaten until say 9pm in the evening and this is usally around 400 calories and i have a weight watchers meal with some steamed veg............. ok the problem lays here, and i know it is the problem and reason why im not losing the weight but i love my beer (fosters) i drink around 8 to 10 cans a day..... i dont start drinking early but come 5 pm onwards i love to drink my beer....

is there anyway i can incorperate alcohol and still lose weight, the light beers are way too expensive and hard to get in the uk and im not a fan of spirits, could it be im not eating enough ?

i manage to do a mile walk each night, and keep faily busy around my house, but is there an answer,i always seem to maintain my weight but losing it just isnt happening

im hoping someone can advise me

all the best

read this book it is revolutionary in thinking about nutrition!

Beer is pretty much liquid bread, so tons of calories, which, when you start drinking, and assuming you drink to you go to sleep, just packs onto your body. My suggestion, is go with what Red said earlier, drink spirits. A, probably cheaper than drinking tons of beer, B. less calories, and C. will get you drunk faster. lol.

You are not going to be able to loose weight drinking that much beer. It's not just the fact that it is full of 'empty' calories, but also, it is the shear volume of liquid that is being consumed, as well as the amount of sodium that is in it and thus causing increased water retention as well as other bad effects on your health. Drinking this much beer every day is Not good for your body. You really do need to nip this now, before you get into some real problems. Eating with in 1 hour of waking up is a good thing, it leads to stabilized blood sugars. Try eating your evening meal earlier in the day. Burn those calories, don't 'sleep' on them. If you were to stop drinking all the beer and eat your meal earlier in the evening, you could get in a workout in the evening. I eat my dinner around 5 PM or so, and I do some type of workout nearly every night around 8 or 830 PM. It's hard to loose weight, I have lost 30 lbs over the past year, by strict diet, dedicated exercise, and not going out to the bar 4 and 5 nights a week to hang out with the buddies. Good Luck to you.

Skip the alcohol and go with the weed. You will get used to it in a few weeks and you will never miss the drinking. The beautiful thing about weed is it can make you feel anyway you want and it is calorie free:)

I would go against weed since it makes you lethargic and brakes will power, i would stay with beer but only every two days, have a day without and get a cardio machine at home like a bike, then do only 10min every day first week and then gradually increase your time by 5 min every day until you get an hour in!

One hour will give you good weight loss and will also alow you to have beer, but don't go full tilt, just every other day.
You will do fine since the bike takes most of the weight from your knees!
Buy the one which has heart monitor on, that will allow you to set pace!
Good luck,

thankyou guys
this is why i always return to this website,i get the facts without the slapping of wrists lol ....
we all like to get a buzz and i have thought about the smoking of weed,i was just warned against weed as i have anxiety problems, but i truly cant see what the problem would be

if you are measuring your food calories you really need to calculate the drink calories. 8-10 beers a day seems like a significant amount of your daily calorie intake. i wouldn't consider that much beer to be a relaxing beverage, your into dependancy at that point i would guess. sadly the only way to lose weight is to take in less than you burn up on a regular basis.

I have the greatest will and motivation of anyone I know. Perhaps it makes you feel lethargic and without will, that does not speak for all. Alcohol is very dangerous and has brought me to some of the most fucked up parts of my life.

I do agree with you that you get more calm but to expect better reflex or aggression you need while sporting i heavily disagree.
Plus im not saying drinking like crazy, only few beers every second day, that way he will still have some pleasure and not crave for it like junkie.

Alcohol is very hard to keep at 2 beers every 2 days, for many this will become a 12 pack a night. If you can keep it at a minimum and it does not hurt your life more power to you, I just have seen too many, myself included, go down the drain because of alcohol abuse. I always started with a couple beers a night and it always turned into a 5th of vodka a day....terrible. Alcohol is easy to abuse while weed is almost impossible to abuse.

So the entire day you only eat 700 total calories and the rest come from beer and you are wondering why you're not losing weight?

Walking a mile isn't near enough exercise to lose weight, period. You need to find out your maintenance calories (2240-2688) and take off 500 calories to create a caloric deficit and exercise, exercise, exercise.

I'd suggest trying to jog. If you can't jog then walk briskly until you can jog. Once you are able to jog I would suggest doing intervals of sprinting/jogging.

Try to limit drinking to the weekends but binge drinking is horrible for your health.

Start lifting weights.

Best of luck.

the harsh truth is i am indeed only eating 600 food calories per day of which i always incorperate plenty of veg,i tend to buy weight watchers meals and add the veg.....
the good news for now is that ive cut down on the beer,im drinking 6 cans of beer but its a start,im also finding myself with more energy so have been out and about on my bike... im just not ready to accept total sobriety,i use alcohol to fill a gap in the day

just curious, why wouldnt i lose weight by eating just 700 calories from food and the rest from beer as long as i stayed within my defecit ?

im guessing its the slowing down of the metabolism

Because alcohol is a simple sugar that quickly converts to fat.

That's why we're here. We're not "ban happy" either. Unlike on other forums, we give people more than a fair chance. It has to come to damn near a human rights violation before you get banned on [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MOS[/words].

Light beers still hold a lot of calories, so thats not really an option. You've got to reduce the drinking - its the only option I'm afraid. There will be a massive amount of calories in 10 cans of fosters - something approaching your daily allowance of callories! There are about 200 callories in a can of foster - 10 cans equals 2000 callories. 70 cans a week equals 14,000 extra callories a week.

As you know, weight loss is only possible if you burn more callories than you consume. Jogging burns off about 500 callories per hour. You can jog for 28 hours per week to burn off just your fosters intake - personally I would find it easier to drink less!

Think about it, each can represents around 24 minutes of jogging - that stacks up a load when you drink around 70 a week. You don't have to give up drinking altogether. Why not set yourself some rules. Manbe only drink at weekends - that would save you 50 cans worth of jogging per week! Or limit yourself to 2 or 3 per evening.

You can't go on drinking so much anyway, as it will eventually start to damage some of your vital organs, so you've no real option but to cut down the drinking!

On the fucking ball!

hey,
i know this thread is old but i thought maybe i could offer some interesting advice. i was in a very similar situation of drinking heavily everyday and put on a ton of weight. At 22 i weighed around 160pounds and at 24 i weighed 210 but i've now changed my life style and im losing 8 pounds a month.
(the loss of over an inch and a half on my nbp lengh is added motivation to keep losing weight lol)
But yeah what im doing is no drinking during the week and eating sensibly. I think your lack of food intake is probably increasing your craving for beer as it's your main calorie intake.
i eat fruit for breakfast, soup for lunch (no bread) then whatever for dinner and drink water, coffee/tea no milk or sugar and one glass of diet soda.
Then come the weekends i get crazy drink beer, eat pizza whatever.
I think maybe if u do it that way you'll be able to stick to it just drink on the weekend and eat sensibly during the week remembering it's a gd idea to eat little and often to keep your metabolism ticking over.

Hope this helps if you got an questions let me know?

I lost about 6kg per month but i did a straight low carb, less than 30g of carbs per day ,and mostly whey and egg whites!

i did 1h cardio every day, weights after.
the most important thing is food...
I will start soon another crazy low carb insanity!

What Red said.
Although there is a slight option.
Guiness and every other stout I've had, has less calories than a light beer. If yer favorite watering hole has stout on tap, than good for you and I'm jealous.
Otherwise, most hard liquor has little or no nutritional value, and if you blend it with diet soda, than correct, it will prob not make you gain weight. Depends how much you drink, and how you handle the drink. Also varied sodium levels in diet soda had varied effects on participants.
