EXCELLENT source of protein!

Guys, I'd like to recommend to each and every individual who is into weights to go out to their local supermarket or grocery store and ask for QUARK CHEESE. I know that most people in the States are more or less unfamiliar with this product and how it relates to bodybuilding nutrition, but here in Scandinavia it is a staple of almost every BBers diet. It is a very cost effecient source of protein (casein = milk protein), and it suits any time of the day since it is slowly digested. This is one of the reasons why it makes for a great pre-bedtime protein snack; milk protein can be compared to meat protein in that it is very slowly digesting, thus making it a much better (and by far cheaper) option than a regular protein shake before hitting the sack.

Quark cheese by itself isn't very appetizing, but the slightly sour taste can be concealed completely bu mixing in some fruit juice, juice concentrate or yoghurt. You can also make a handy protein serving during breakfast (or any other time of the day if you want to cut down on eating meat while still getting your proteins) by adding berries, fruits, cereal, brans/oat flakes or pretty much anything your mind can conceive. It actually tastes like you're having dessert if you mix in the right stuff, and it's guaranteed to be one of the healthiest sources of protein out there. :cheers:

This rant ended up sounding a bit like an infomercial, but you can really save a penny on protein powders if you opt for quark cheese instead (you'll still need your whey shakes for post-workout recovery, though)!
 
Please do! :) It's great stuff, and I've always wondered why people in the States haven't gotten around to using it. Hopefully at least a few [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MoS[/words] members will try it out and spread the word once they see how good it is.

Actually it's the name of the product, ''quark cheese''. I have no idea about brand names in the States. It took me a while to even find out what it's called in English since I too used to think it didn't exist in the U.S.
 
wow, i didn't know that :)
but isn't it better to use powdered protein? it's all concentrated you know, and i think you have to eat lot's of quark cheese to achieve the same amount.

Actually you don't have to eat a whole lot. :) The protein content is roughly the same as in any type of meat, but the good thing is that there is virtually no animal fat in there. A serving of 250 grams (which is about the size of a small cereal bowl) will be MUCH faster to wolf down than a similar sized steak or piece of chicken, for example. The structure is kinda like a mixture of yoghurt and soft spread.

And Adolf, it comes from cows. :P It's a dairy product, not unlike yoghurt, except that it has far higher protein content.
 
Very interesting post. Next time I go to the grocery store I'll compare the protein content of cottage cheese vs. regular cheese. I know it's way lower in fat but I wasn't aware of it having a higher protein value. If you're out there Shafty could you shed some light on this for us American blokes.

Quark is a soft, spreadable German cream cheese with a tangy flavor. It is available in textures that range from creamy and spreadable to firm.

Varieties
A modern cheese variety, Quark features a low fat content of about 0.3 to 11%. When made with 0.3% fat content, it is firm, crumbly, and dry. Made with a 5% fat content, its texture resembles that of low-fat American ricotta. Quark with an 11% fat content resembles very smooth cream cheese.

When Quark is used to create a processed cheese, it may be combined with cream, butter, onions, and paprika, and is intended to be used as a snack or condiment. Quark is also used to make a variety of fresh sour-curd cheeses in Germany, Austria, and the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Damn MAXAMEYES, thanks for that very informative post. I thought they were saying it was cottage cheese. On my next trip to Whole Foods I'm going to see if I can pick some of this majic stuff up. I eat mostly soy cheese but I'm really curious about this stuff.
 
I don't know it that's cheaper though. A 27g of protein costs me around 0,70$ (70 cents) and it's even cheaper in the US. It's less than a can of tuna, fish and I doubt cheese can beat that as cheese tend to be pricey. But I don't know about this kind of cheese, gotta check this out :)
 
i was just kidding, but seriously i cant stand the taste or smell of cottage cheese. One source of protein i dont touch. Got my tuna, chicken, beef, whey protein and cassein protein. But i stay away from cottage the cassein shake i think makes up for it.

Well cheese gives you casein basically... so i guesss you're right! Casein would be better before going to bed, and whey, just after a workout, right.

Casein is way too much expensive for me to consider though rofl
 
Bought this Quark cheese from Asda here in the UK recently, havent tried it yet but they sold it :) and yeah it's high in protein.
