Hey Vlad,

Gwar Rulez! I actually play in an technical thrash band in my hometown. We had the privilege of opening for the Dave Brockie Experience three times. I met Dave (Oderus). He's a really cool dude, pretty nutty.

I'll be the first nerd to chime in. I listen to lots of 20th century orchestral type stuff. Some recent favorites are Ives, Webern, Gorecki, Varese, Bartok (fellow Hungarian), Stravinsky (of course), Holst, and Veress (also Hungarian).

Some late 19th century stuff that I listen to sometimes include Mahler, RacHydromaxaninov, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky. But that's too tonal for me to listen to very much.

Some film composers I really like (this is my major, BTW) are Howard Shore (LOTR, Silence of the Lambs, went to my college), Elliot Goldenthal (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Final Fantasy, Frida), Danny Elfman (Nightmare Before Christmas, almost all Tim Burton films, Batman 1&2, Spiderman 1&2), Hans Zimmer (Gladiator), James Horner (Mask of Zorro, The Last Samurai), and of course, John Williams (Star Wars, almost every Spielberg film).

I also listen to some rock. Radiohead, Coldplay, twothirtyeight, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Taken From You, and Denison Marrs...yup, that's about all for rock. And I really love Bjork. She has some fantastic stuff.

I used to be a huge jazz fan. It's pretty rare for me to listen to it now, but sometimes. Miles Davis is my favorite. A few others are good but Miles is the best, especially his work with Gil Evans. And his quintet stuff. After Bitches Brew it was all downhill.

I think I've typed enough about music. :D

Too much music to mention.. LOL. I can't live without music. :-O

I listen a lot to classic rock such as Queen, Kiss, Aerosmith and many many more. Sometimes I listen to Black Sabbath, but can't listen to it for a long period of time. I also listen to bluesy stuff, such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King. I listen to many of the guitar greats, including Jimi Hendrix and Joe Satriani.. =) I listen to classical music too, and other instrumental music such as work by Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda (The guys that make music for video games such as the Final Fantasy and Chrono-series). =) I also seem to have a thing for wrestler themes, particularly Japanese ones. :lol

Hey 9Cyclops,
I love Howard Shore's stuff, esp. what he's accomplished in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Danny Elfman rules too. How bout John Williams though? Like in Jurassic Park. Awesome stuff..........peace

I'm not too big n ICP, but I think they do good music when they collaberate with Esham. Psychopatic Records are in a class of there own.

Wow. All these artist and all these diffrent taste and no one has ever heard of a guy
named John Lennon. See, the story is this Lennon fellow and a couple of his buddies from somewhere called Liverpool put together a nice little 4 piece band and sold a couple of records along the way. The sad part is, they never got to much radio play so very few of their songs were ever heard. Anyway, if some of you guys ever get a chance, you should listen to some of the songs by the Beatles( I think thats what they're called) They are a pretty good band but good luck trying to find any of their music out there.

The real Beatles experience is making up a good brew of mushroom tea(not into the chemicals) and watching "The Yellow SuBathmatearine"..... Thats an experience....

Yellow SuBathmatearine. What a classic. My daughter LOVES that cartoon and even named our dog "Ringo" because she thinks he is so funny in it.

C'mon guys, the Beatles RULE/ROCK
When one of those other bands sell over a BILLION units of music world-wide, then you can talk to me ;)

koooky

Oh man. Boy bands. Give me a break.

Yeah the Beatles were and are still popular, but that doesn't make them all that great. I could write that crap. They weren't good musicians, they just had the charisma to be popular and sell music.

Just because a group sells a load of albums sure as hell doesnt mean they are good.....Radio music sells the most, AND IT IS ALL FUCKING GARBAGE. Look at what Rap has deteriorated into, the most popular shit is 50cent, he has sold a massive amount of albums, Puffy is even worse, he cant even rap, I know hes a producer.....Look at the money that guy has made...Rap is shitty now because it is made for a dominantly white fanbase, and most people are fuckin braindead when it comes to music, im white but I think I know my shit

Thanks to Twins172_up for jogging my memory about smiff-n-wesson and black moon, That is good rap, They have probably not sold over 50 000 units...

I go into a blind rage when I hear a person yell G G G G-unit....

two days ago my buddy(who really does know his rap) and I were walking to my other freinds house. He says to me "You know, I only really like shit that has blown up and gone commercial"......I recoiled in horror...."That is the worst possible thing a person could say about any kind of music..... So I pushed him, and he fell.....

Geez Cyclops, you make it sound SO easy. Go ahead. Write one, THAT'S ONE song that will be a hit and will live on for 30-40 years and tell me how easy it is. You said it yourself, the Beatles were AND ARE STILL popular. Their work has survived the test of decades and that does indeed make them great. Let's see if the Back Street Boys are still selling records after 30-40 years. You tell me how a band that broke up in 1970 Sells
6 platinum LP's 30 years later. How many other bands have had number one songs with full orchastras and a sitar? Listen to each of their albums from say 65 on and each sounds diffrent. How many artist today are really putting out music that will stand the test of decades? The numbers more than speak for themselves. If it wasn't THAT good, would it still be around?

koooky

Big sales does not equal good music. Their music has no substance. All very predictable, all very "the same" sounding. Yes, as far as pop music goes, they are icons. The lyrics are good. The music sells like crazy. They had charisma. They had stage presence. They had looks (which, sadly, is almost all that pop music is based on now). But as far as the MUSIC being good, I don't think so. The music is very bland, and it is very difficult for me to listen to because it isn't interesting.

Give me Raiohead any day. Their music keeps my interest no matter how many times I listen to it, because they try to push the limits of what they can do. I look at music as art, and not entertainment. Yeah, it can be entertaining, but it can also go much deeper than that. And the Beatles just don't do it for me.

Better yet, give me Charles Ives. His music has stood the test of decades. I believe he died in 1925. His music still sells well. Maybe not billions but he is still thought of as a genius, and WAY ahead of his time. But as H.L. Mencken said:

"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public"

It's very true. Look at all the multimillionaire pop artists that have written crap music in the last several decades. You'll see what he means.

I agree. Music is art. It is an expression of creativiity. When you say their music is uninteresting are you speaking pre 64 or 65 on up? I would assume you are speaking pre 64 and I would agree with much of what you said. The 65 and on work is the most interesting in pop/rock history. From that time frame on, you see how a band evolves. They were always looking for new sounds to add to the LP and not use the same formula of what worked earlier. I asked once and shall ask again, what other pop/rock artist(s) achieved number 1 hit status while using a full ochastra and also a number one while featuring a sitar as the main muisc? The first "concept" LP is and has always been recognized as Sgt. Peppers. When the Beatles stopped touring, that is when they started to turn out the most interesting and creative music of the day. You said above that their music was all very predictable and very "same" sounding. I ask you exactly what in their music predicted hit songs with a sitar and an orchastra? What was it that clued you in that they would be the first to use feedback as part of the recording? How about be fair and compare it to other music of its time? No band then or now spent as much time in producing the best music they could because they had quit touring. The LP would be the tour. Also, I disagree with your very first and second statements. If the music wasn't good and lacked substance, how then would it have survived this long? Have you even heard their song Elanor Rigby? How can you say that that song has no substance or isn't deep? To say you don't like it and that it doesn't suit your taste is one thing, but to lump their entire work as "crap" makes it sound as if anyone could do what they were able to achieve, yet no one has. How strange.

I agree. I am not disputing their greatness. In the same line of thought, why are the
Beatles the most covered band of all time?

koooky

Well, as you said, they were and still are very popular. They have catchy tunes, and the songs are relatively easy to play. I'm in no way denying the Beatles greatness, I just like to listen to other music. There is other music that feels immortal, such as Queen, 70s Kiss, AC/DC and many many more. :) I do listen to Beatles every now and then, but it's mainly their hits.. John Lennon's 'Imagine' is a masterpiece, and I love McCartney's "Live and Let Die". =)

I saw the most amusing thing on the web about the Beatles, and that was a conspiracy theory that McCartney was replaced with a lookalike early on.. Don't remember if it was the 60s or the 70s.

I'm with you man. I listen to some of the same guys you mentioned above. I also like Zep, Floyd, and Heart. But, if I were stranded on an island and could only listen to one band's music, it would be the Beatles.

The conspiracy in which you speak is all over their music and LP covers from 65 on up.
There are tons of "clues" in the lyrics and the LP cover art and I even own a book dedicated to that very thing. Very interesting for a group to add more and more clues to the mystery with each LP.

koooky

the thing with the beatles becoming so popular is because they came around with the right music at the right time. They came in and started playing this rock and roll music when the majority of music consisted of ballad singers (stuff like frank sinatra), suddenly here was this fresh new band, with catchy songs, instruments and "good" looks.

Its the same with alot of these people, im not an amazing fan of the beatles, the rolling stones, jimi hendrix, queen or bands like that, but theyre all the same, the came around at the right time and captured a hungry audience. I may not think theyre good but i cant deny that all these bands revolutionised
1. the way music is looked at
and
2. inspired countless of other bands

the beatles are hailed as the biggest band ever, much in the same way as how elvis is seen as the greatest musician who ever lived, theres no singular reason why the got so big, all that needs to be known is that they did.

If you want some amazing creativity, check out Devin Townsend at www.hevydevy.com. He has done the metal band Strapping Young Lad but also does solo music which is some of the most heartfelt shit you could ever hear.

Everything except extreme rock/metal, and alt metal. *looks around nervously*

I also hate techno but I LOVE house music. *jack my body* *can you feel it* *you aint really down, playing the games you do*

I love old school r&b and soul music. *girl you know IIIIIII love you no matter what you do... cuz I loooove you... CUZ I love you... LOOOOOOVEEEE YOOOOUUUU.... Oh oh oh oh oh ooooooooooooh* that is what I am listening to right now as I type this.

I love 70's music. :)
