I made this in about 15 minutes or so the other day. Ideally, you want to construct the entire thing out of the type of nylon braided hose that the top piece is made from, but the Lowe's nearest to me was totally out of anything but the 1.25" diameter stuff (which I used for the top piece). Most guys who make these will use 1.25" diameter hose for the top piece and somewhere between 1.5" and 1.75" diameter hose for the bottom piece. I find 1.5" diameter hose works best for me as a bottom piece. Note, the hose clamp pictured here opens to a maximum size of 2" (two inches), I have found this size clamp to be best.
The white hose I had to use in place of the braided nylon hose is called "flex hose". Otherwise, the braided nylon stuff is called exactly that "braided nylon hose". LOL. I would not suggest you use any hose that is very soft. The hoses suggested by myself and BIB in the 'how to' threads I have here are suggested on purpose. You need something that is semi rigid, but at the same time, semi flexible. Pipe insulation is not a good idea either.
This type of hanger is all we had to hang with a few years ago, and this Modified Hanger can be used to hang as heavily as any of you might ever need to hang with. I have two pics:
