Anyone take 5-htp???!

Ok, Ive been trying to workout somewhat of a normal sleep pattern for the past like 2 weeks, not going too well, and one of the first things i did was buy some shit from the vitamin shoppe- super snooze (a mixture of herbs that are supposed to make you sleepy) and 5 htp (i wanted just the 5 htp, but it came w/ a shit load of b6 in it). I liked the 5htp, though it didnt seem to make me sleepy, and the other stuff didnt do dick.

My question is this- Ive been taking the 5 htp like 3 times a day- 50 mg each dose for about 1 1/2 weeks. My libido has seemed to gone down and I cant get a rockhard erection for shit. Im thinking it might be the 5 htp, what do you guys think?

Anybody ever taken this stuff or still does?

I know it turns into seratonin in the brain, but would this effect my erections?

I also take a multi vit., about 3 grams of l arginine, and ginseng (every other day) on a daily basis.

Any help would be greatly appreciated- as always.
 
If you are looking for a natural sleep aide, go with melatonin. Nothing compares. Just make sure you have at least 8 hours dedicated to sleep when taking it.

The typical dosage is anywhere from 1-10mg. 1mg works just fine for me, but 3mg is usually best. Any more and you might wake up groggy, unless you get plenty of sleep. I have only become groggy once when I took 5mg and got less than 8 hours.
 
I know 5HTP is sold as an anti-depressant and has the same neurological effect as a SSRI. So that being said you will find you will be calmer maybe and more focused but it screws with your seratonin and dopamine levels and that's part of the reason your not getting horny. The other reason is that most of these may or can up your prolactin levels which will make sex undesirable. Stay away from it unless you're trying to ween yourself of SSRI's. Melatonin is aces for catching zzz's, maybe even through in some Valerian Root.
 
Thanks guys- yeah i figured it had something to do with it effecting my seratonin levels... Im gonna lay off it- maybe try some before sex to last longer?

Anyway, tommorow im off to vitamin shoppe again for some melatonin and valerian root.

valerian root smells like sweaty socks and didn't do nuthin' for me. Try the melatonin, if that doesn't work, then try valerian. You could end up saving yourself mucho dinero in the long haul.

It would appear that you have no clue as to what 5 HTP is, and what it is used for. You have taken a massive dose, and while you will not really hurt yourself, it will take a few days for the "upregulation/downregulation" effect to bring you down to where you need to be.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter. Basically a neurotransmitter takes the message from one side of a receptor (where the nerve ends) to the other side of the receptor (where the nerve begins again). I like to use the analogy of a wheelbarrow to describe the function. Serotoinin is the wheel barrow that moves the signal from one side to the other side. The amount of wheelbarrows in the "synaptic cleft" (synapse for short) determines the efficiency of the neurotransmission.

5 HTP is chemically "hyroxylated tryptophan." Tryptophan is a an amino acid. It is one of 20 that your body uses and is collectively "protein." Hydroxylation is the process of where a hydroxyl (two hydrogen atoms in a particular shape) is added to the molecule. In humans, it is done in the liver for Tryptophan. It requires, Tryptophan, two enzymes and a hydroxl donor. When the process is done, you have 5 HTP, or Hydroxylated Tryptophan.

The conversion to Serotoin takes place usually in the serotonin receptor. The process is called "decarboxylation" and it is the removal of a carboxyl (cooh) through an enzyme action. And enzyme is like "chemical scissors" that are used once.

The decarboxylation enzyme is a non saturated enzyme, meaning that your body has a lot more than you need. What this means is that when you take 5 HTP in large amounts, you will exhaust that enzyme, therby raising your serotonin levles systemically, and for the rest that cannot be coverted, you will excrete it.

As you raised your levels of Serotonin without reason, the brain reacts in an effort to balance the overall response of all of the receptors, and "turns down the volume of those receptors" by a process called "upregulation/down regulation"

So, you took a ton of 5 HTP, causing a rapid increase in Serotoin, until you exhaused the decarboxylation enzymes, causing your body to react by using downregulation to bring the signal strength back to normal, and having you piss out every bit of the 5 htp that could not be converted.

The result in this case is not very harmful to you. You will feel a bit sluggish for a few days while your brain goes through upregulation. Your pocket book has been lightened by the money that you wasted in your experiment and you will not sleep any better because the conversion of serotoinin into melatonin is a feedback controlled reaction. Which means that if you don't need it, the body won't convert it.

There is a good side to this, and hopefully one for you to ponder for some time. If you had done this experiment with Tylenol instead of 5 HTP, you may already be dead. Tylenol is quite safe when USED AS DIRECTED. If you do not follow the instructions, you will wipe out your liver. This can happen, HAS HAPPenis EnlargementNED, AND WILL HAPPenis EnlargementN IN THE FUTURE. And for the victim, the only thing that can be done is a liver transplant. I would think in that situation that your penis would be far from your thoughts.

Please know that knowledge is power. Be smart. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH. IT CAN HURT YOU IF YOU DO NOT KNOW!!!

Oh, and More Meat, high levels of Serotoin will depress your erections, and make an orgasm much more difficult. The endocrinology is long and complex, so I won't go into the why, but just know that it will. And don't do that again.

5 HTP is WONDERFUL, and there is NOTHING THAT CAN REPLACE IT. as long as you NEED more serotonin. If you don't need it, it does nothing for you, and as you noticed has some negative side effects.

Oh, and one more thing. I used Tylenol as the example of a pontentially deadly item that is available over the counter and used my hundreds of millions of people. There are many more that are just as risky, so read ALL of the boxes of stuff that you are going to put into your body, especially in large amounts.

Alright, thanks stage- even though you kind of seemed like my dad yelling at me :) ... I do appreciate your concern and knowledge though.

I know all about seratonin as i know much about psychology. The way you explained it sounds a lot like what happens with say a drug like cocaine, where your brain gets flooded with a neuroreceptor (causing the high), but not all of it can be absorbed so some is lost- causing you to progressively not get as high as the last time and ulimately not being able to get as happy as you could before. Is this the same process that happened with me and the 5htp on a much smaller level or no?

Anyway, what would you say is the proper dose? Or should I just stop taking it completely?

Stage knows what he is talking about. I would discontinue the 5-htp altogether. Skip all the intermediate pathways, and go with melatonin!
 
Got the melatonin and tried it last nite.. the shit works great, I highly recommend it. Thanks Goldie!

Ive also cut out the 5 htp and my dick is working just fine again :) thank little baby jesus! Though I might take it once in a while once my sleep schedule gets worked out and normalized as ive read a lot saying that it helps you to deep sleep more and dream more vividly- lucid dreaming more and all. We'll see though, and i can always give it up if it effects my dick.

for more lucid dreaming/deep sleep, try ZMA first. Doesn't fuck with neurotransmitters as much as 5-htp and might actually HELP your pe efforts. Leave the 5-htp alone. I needa get me some Powerade...
