You are correct that the OTC male fertility test kits are not very accurate. They also don't check for motility, which is important for fertility. They basically provide a test strip that allows you to compare the color from your sample against a reference to get a rough idea of what your sperm count is.

If the test clearly shows a high sperm count, then you're probably OK and you've saved yourself from a couple of doctor's visits and lab tests. But if it indicates a borderline or low count, then you should visit a doctor to get an actual lab analysis done.
