I am looking into starting to do some online trading stocks as a hobby. I basically know jack about it right now. I thought I would ask you guys for advice because obviously you all have access to the net if you can read this, and no doubt some of you are day-trading savy.

What online broker do you use? Looks like Ameritrade isn't bad
Do you subscribe to "tip" services?
etc.

I plan on only putting in $500-$1000 at first till I figure shit out, so I will not be power trading or anything, any advice would be fantastic.

Well as a rank beginner to the world of trading I read a book callled

"The neatest little guide to stock market investing"

I know sounds pretty lame, but it's a great starter book and has top reviews. Nothing specific to online trading though..

As a seasoned trader, I would suggest that you get a good Broker, I ue TD Green line, at least they are Honest. There is another book you should buy: The Naked Investor, by John Lawrence Reynolds. He tells it like it is. he has been there and done that. He will open your eyes to the cons that can take place in the stock market. He has one word for a lot of brokers, "Con Artist" who make money from churning you investment. Read it and be warned. They say that to be for Warned is to be for Armed.

Good luck

Thanks guys,

I am always wary of scammers, but its tough to know up or down when getting started. Time to hit the books I guess.

The thing that you have to watch out for, is the smooth talker who promises you the world. Also, Do not give one Broker all your cash, better to spread it around, Do not sign any agreement that stipulates that the broker can flip your stocks as he wants. Get a full disclosure of all the transactions the broker recommends. Make sure that no trades can place without your full permission. If in doubt leave it out. If it sounds to could to be true, then it probably is. Remember every Broker has a sucker list, make sure your name is not on it. In addition, remember that the investment industry, are self regulating, and they will always back their own, they never fight for the victim. If they loose your money, you are fucked. and lots of people loose thousands of $$$ every day to dishonest brokers. Remember the Broker makes money by trading your cash. If they recommend a stock and tell you that you have to buy that stock today, leave that broker. Any stock that is recommended by any broker, or by anyone for that matter, do not jump in with both feet. feel the water first. In other words do your own research, get more than one opinion on the stock. Good luck.
