Do anyone know a better online backup solution then OneDrive?

It needs to be reliable, secure, private and have the ability to store any kind of data without questions. Should not be that expensive as well. Not interested in any free backup solution.

I would be extremely appreciative, if anyone had any suggestions I could look into.
I don't trust OneDrive fully with my more sensitive data.

I know I could buy my own NAS (or build my own) or something, but that's not something I can do right now.

Kind regards

Why not backup to external hard drive?

I will do that. Need to structure my data, it's so all over the place right now. I have only like 1 gigabyte left on my laptop.

I use two large external drives with encrypted filesystems. Every two weeks I rsync the desktop's filesystem against one. A friend of mine and I do lunch every two weeks; he brings my previous latest backup drive and his latest backup, and I give him my latest backup. The two drives I get from him go into my fire safe; next time we do lunch his gets swapped for his latest and I get my oldest back.

It's not a perfect solution - a data error on my main drive can quickly propagate across the two backups - but it does provide off-site storage.

I have zero use for anything "cloud" or web based. There are too many potential failure scenarios for me, not the least being that internet service in my area is both usage-capped and unreliable.

Thanks for sharing.
I don't trust Microsoft (OneDrive) with my files any more. That was some awesome/unusual backup solution you got there, @AndyJ. 👌

Some update on my way to backup my files.
I bought an external SSD (IP65 certified and drop resistant, 3 meters) and though I could download folders with a size of ~ 40 GB and above through Google Chrome. It did not work at all.

Something are breaking the connection after awhile.
It may be the network card (it's not my router) but I do not think so. I need to check the settings (maybe the network card are going to sleep after a while?). Or some settings in Google Chrome, or some stupid limitations with ObeDrive. Either way it doesn't work for me.

I'm sick and tired of this limitations of OneNote. I have already spent over 99.59 USD on this external USB SSD. I regret I spending the money on this drive. Would have been better to just get an ordinary reliable HDD and connect it internally. Lesson learned.

What I need to do is to replace my CD/DVD reader with another internal 2.5" SSD/HDD (there are sleds for this) and then let OneDrive files backup on this drive, through ObeDrive Microsoft Windows 10 application.

My system drive is completely full. So I can't do anything right now on my computer.

And then finely I'm able to copy all the files from my new HDD to my external SSD. Then I will own my own files fully. This solution was expensive. Maybe it's time to get another computer. But it works...and I'm a cheap man and do not want to spend money on things I do not need.
The keyboard on this old laptop is the best keyboard I have ever used on a laptop. It's the old style Lenovo laptops, before they modernized them with slim keyvoards, and weak hinges for the screens.

Anyways this will be my solution. Wish me luck in my quest. 🙂

This is the only solution I see since Chrome for some reason can't keep the download connection active. It was much more solid with Google Drive, I regret I switched to OneDrive.

This is the slead I need to get to mount a SSD/HDD in the DVD drive bay (not expensive).

I have an external eSATA connection as well, but I don't think it will be easy to use that, since the standard/connection is not common today. Then I need an external power supply as well. 🤣
i try to keep it simple.

It's really easy to replace the CD/DVD drive with this sled.

I thought this backup of mine was going to be easy. Apparently not. 😕

File backup is important.
I regret I threw away my old backups...I lost so much in that. Like picures when I was a child and so forth.
I will never throw away a harddrive/SSD...just keep increasing my data with as secured backups as I can. I probably need a NAS/SERVER in the future. We will see. It's not like I can buy everything I need, money 💰are not growing 🌲 fast for me.

I just wanted to share my problem. And the things that can happen when you do not have control of your own data. Maybe someone else will be helped by this.

Take care brothers.

Exciting news...just wanted to share my happiness.
Switched to Ubuntu Linux and I was able to download one and one folder through the web browser. Tried with rclone first but couldn't get that to work.
If that would have worked the process of downloading would have been much faster. Amazing that just switching system to Ubuntu Linux and a new big hard dirve, and the problem could be solved. I could have fixed this download problem with Windows as well, but because my Windows 10 partition is to small it would have been more complicated.

Have just extracted one file now, and it seams to work. Will move all my files to an external SSD when my DVD sled/cabinet for HDD arrives, I need to use the Lenovo T410 with 8 Gb ram (not 4 Gb ram), and with the system partition on an SSD to do this, it will be faster.

OneDrive from Microsoft do not have a good solution in how they are doing things, in my option.

In order to download all your data you need a big enough HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or SSD (Solid State Drive) in order to download everything. Imagine having 4 TB of data 😳. You can off course switch where the OneDrive is located (switch drive/partition) but that process is so time consuming, and you need two internal drives for this process (if your system drive/partition is to small).

Especially when you "only" have a 100Mbit/100Mbit fibre line into your house. Maybe OneDrive have a upper limit as well, max speed was at ~ 2.5Mb/seconds (but I have an old PC as well), through the web browser.

In my belief OneDrive is only supposed to be for consumers, that have low data storage.

Even if they have solutions for companies, my belief is that everything is to complicated, especially if you need your data somewhere else. I believe the company I work for use Microsofts systems, but I believe they are using their own servers for it.
I don't know everything about that side. I just think OneDrive from Microsoft is not good for consumers if they want to own all their data.

For this reason I have started to move all my data from their servers. I also use OneNote (from Microsoft) a lot, and I need to find away to move all those notes from their servers as well. This was a bigger project then I thought.

The most optimal solution to move the data from OneDrive would be:
So first you need to make every file local on your Windows Machine (download every singel file), then when this is accomplished you need to copy all the files to your local storage solution. Not until this is done, you own your data fully, and have full control of it.

When downloading files/folders through the web browser interface you can max download 2 folders at a time, and sometimes the download do not finnish (if you have really a lot of data in the folders).
I remember this was much easier with Google Drive, why did I even bothered to switch to OneDrive? 🤔
With Goolgle Drive you just requested to download all data, and later you got a link to download it all in one go, without any problems at all.

This have been stressfull for me.
Just wanted to share my thoughts on OneDrive. I do not recommend it at all, to anyone.

Maybe no one care about this post, but this will be a warning to all, be really careful in how you backup your data. Imagine if all data was lost on OneDrive, or your phone just crashing.
I don't think you would have a lot to say about as a consumer to Microsoft if that happened. Why take the risk?

Kind regards brothers, and as I always say. Grow big. 💪

Backups are so important. I've remember going through so much loss in data. Pics, videos articles just a terrible thing to go throgh.

Yes so important with backups. I'm free from Microsoft now. I'm using both Linux and personal local storage. 🙌
But my video editing softwares are on Windows 🤔

The optimal solution is aws Amazon. But you need to be able to set it up, and that can be tricky.
