slow squash jelq question

I was wondering if this exercise is effective at 75-80 percent erect. I ask this because I cant squeeze around the base of my shaft too well when I'm 100 percent erect. Does anyone else have this problem?
 
That's the idea (hence the word "squash")...you want to get a lot of expansion with this jelq by squising down on the shaft like bending it, while jelqing upwards or at least thats how I do it. It cannot really be done fully erect. I mean, you can start off dry jelqing and just let it soften up by itself for the full sqash.
