I saw punch drunk in the theater and enjoyed it, ironically there was a group of older (in there 50s) she made it clear that they thought it was horrible...One of the woman went so far as to demand her money back..so maybe a lot of naive people just didnt' get it, or couldn't buy sandler in a straight role, although I thought he pulled it off.
Originally Paul thomas Anderson was supposed to be developing a film with sandler based on an old SNL sketch with Shannon Doherty called "The Denise show", about a loser trying to get back his girlfriend....that never happened so I guess this grew out of it.
It actually screened in Brooklyn NY, with a Q and A with P.T. Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, following the film unfortunately it sold out quickly. >:(

The actress who plays his sister is Mary Lynn Rajskuh she was in Storytelling and played a blind girl in Road Trip.


I am pursuing writing/directing and acting. I've written quite a number of screenplays, and have directed some no budget digital video films.
I never went to film school, I guess I learned by doing. I'm still learning and I'm in the process of polishing a couple scripts to send out to agencies/producers, just trying to get my foot in the door.

What about you?
 
I can't understand how people can miss out on such richness of style and content just because they can't 'accept' a comedic actor. The same thing was happening with Lost in Translation: I was amazed at the decision to sell it as a comedy when I had been so moved by it. Of course, on second viewing I was struck by Murray's incredible comic timing and how funny it really was at moments.

Mary Lynn Rajskuh is also terrific in a tiny moment in The Anniversary Party. Have you seen it?

I never studied film but having grown up in Los Angeles I've had my close encounters including a job or two in the industry.

One of my closest friends graduated from UC film school and taught me a lot when I was in my early twenties: many screenings and many film festivals.

Basically, I'm just a cinephile.

Never saw the anniversary party, I know it was shot on digital video, I plan on checking it out.
The grifter's was great, haven't seen it in like ten years though (love the scene where cusack gets caught by the bartender trying to switch the twenty)
Barfly is good as well, i wish Rourke could get his shit together, he used to be pretty good.
Love Goodfellas, and gangs of NY, never saw age of innocence. I'd watch a women giving birth if scorcese filmed it.

This thread is pretty cool, I' ve already found out about some films that I had never even heard of before

Donny Darko was interesting, don't know if anyone listed that yet.
 
Donnie Darko - yeah, that was an interesting flick. I hear that a director's cut will be coming out on [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/mosdvd.htm]DVD[/words] this April.

Anyone ever see Ghost World?
 
Oh yeah Donnie Darko was really good. Has anyone seen B. Monkey? Its a British film...Asia Argento (very good in this movie...and hot), Jared Harris, Rupert Everett, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (also good). I recommend it.
 
Ghost World had that great cast. I can't take my eyes of Scarlet Johansen, even if she isn't the strongest actress in the box.

Have you seen either of the documentaries 'Crumb' or 'American Splendor'? You'd like them both if you liked Ghost World, I think. I liked 'American Splendor' tremendously. The two films would be a fitting double feature.

Yeah, I've seen both. I must say though that I did not really care for American Splendor. It was a visually appealing movie, but I simply could not care less what heppened to the characters, hence wasn't all too impacted from the movie.
 
Crumb is a great documentary...haven't seen American splendor yet but plan on renting it soon.
Terry Zwigoff directed Crumb and Ghost world, he also did Bad Santa more recently. I thought bad santa was pretty damn funny, pretty ballsy for studio for in these "politically correct" times.

Snatch is cool as well, but I think it has too many cuts, it's like a full length MTV video, which is fine for now, but I think in like ten years it'll look extremely dated, I still own the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/mosdvd.htm]DVD[/words] and enjoy it though.
 
I could make a long list but these are my top 3:

1. Fight club (Brad Pitt and Ed Norton are amazing in that movie, aswell as the actual story and twist, I think Ed Norton is one of, if not the best character actors at this time, I mean look at him in American History X, Fight Club, Primal Fear, I can't believe that it's the same guy!)

2. Minority Report (everyone I know hates this movie but I thought that the story and twists were amazing, also, this is my favourite genre, future sci-fi, things like Demolition Man, Total Recall, Judge Dredd, though Minority Report is my favourite.

3. any of the James Bond films, I am a BIG James Bond fan especially Sean Connery, my favourite is "You only live twice"

And gave you seen recent photos of good old Mickey Rourke? Man, I remember loving Rumblefish and those Coppola movies of the SE Hinton books.

We had a perfect onside goal disallowed, Its a sham.

i didnt think donnie darko was that good. i thought it was entertaining in terms of effects and imagery but it wasnt enough to make up for a weak plot that really wasnt that deep. it was obvious, not that interesting, or even really necessary and relied too much on the old "really smart weird kid" mantra. it was funny though to see patrick swaze get arrested for having a child adult entertainment "dungeon."

The Wicker Man and The Last American Virgin - both had unexpected, surprise endings that would not be found in a typical Hollywood film of today. Great choices!
