Anyone have any experience with Propecia (Hair loss drug)?

I know this probably isn't the best forum section to put this thread in, but I was pretty sure this section gets the most amount of attention, so I decided to put it here. Mods can move it if you really need to.

I was just prescribed Proscar (Propecia) to stop my hair loss (I Am 26 btw). I was just wondering if anyone here has taken/is taking it that can tell me about their experience? Not only its effects on their hair, but also whether they experienced any of the (hopefully) uncommon side effects? And if they did, how long before they noticed them, and if/when they went away?

Finally, as this drug is supposed to minimize the amount of testosterone converted to DHT, I believe it is expected to slow down Penis Enlargement gains since DHT is an important factor in penile growth. Anyone has any thoughts on this?

DHT and all the other chemical effects on penis growth, imo, are pretty much theory. Pull it, jelq it with everything you got and it will grow as fast as anyone.

I've used Finasteride on and off for years (along with Rogaine) to delay the inevitable. It has definitely slowed the process, but in no way did it stop my hair loss. I have more hair than I would if I had never used it though. I do feel some of the sexual sides here and there, but overall, not too many problems there.
Unfortuantely, there are also "Propecia sheds" as well. This is where you begin to shed hair. Often it comes back, but it is unnerving while it's happening and the returning hair can take up to 180 days to 'cycle back' throug its growth cycle.
I think it's worth it, but have your blood levels checked periodically to ensure everythings ok.

I am not sure if "on and off" is a good idea, because this is something that I hear should be consistently taken to see results. But yes, I don't expect it to completely stop the hairloss, just to slow it down hopefully enough to get me to an age where I will care a bit less whether i have a full head of hair or some hair missing here and there.

I am gonna stay on it and hope for the best. My only problem is since the side effects are mostly sexual, I am afraid I will see 'placebo' effects caused by psychological reasons rather than the drug itself.

The few side effects that you did notice, how long were you taking the drug before noticed them?

You're right. Long term, consistent use is best. I have used it for years at a time and then go off for 6 months for whatever reason. Sounds like you're in the same position I was when I was younger; just wanted something to delay the loss. As far as sexual sides, I do get them at times. It comes and goes, but i'm 38 years old too. When it comes, my 'drive' is in the toilet for like a week and then it comes back. During this time, it's not like I can't operate, but he internal desire is reduced sometimes.

I have been using this under its old name of proscar for 16 years since it became available in Canada. Same drug, just different name when it's used for prostate enlargement. Just cut the 5 mg pills into quarters. It does work to help you keep your har, but at most (supposedly) you'll grow back what you've lost in the last two years. Many men supplement it with high strength minoxidil which can be purchased from any number of reputable websites, or can be made up by a compounding pharmacy.

I have never experienced any side effects whatsoever. 51 years old btw.

I am using Proscar too. I just called it Propecia as it's known by that name.

That's great news Cdarro. Hopefully I won't experience any side effects either.
