The penis is made up of 3 cylinders, the two cavernous bodies at the top and the urethra at the bottom. Erection is produced by the entry of arterial blood into the corpora cavernosa, while the occlusive mechanism of the veins is activated to prevent venous blood from leaving the penis. A loose erection can be due either to an insufficient entry of arterial blood (most often) or to a failure of the veno-occlusive mechanism.
The entry and maintenance of blood into the penis, as well as its sensitivity, is regulated by the nerves of the penis (cavernous nerves and pudendal nerve) which come from the spinal cord, which is in turn connected to the brain. A correct hormonal balance is also very important, especially for sexual desire. Finally, an adequate psychological environment is also necessary for an erection to take place.
We can therefore say that erection is a neurovascular phenomenon produced under hormonal control and in a specific psychological environment. There are several types of erection:

Psychogenic: triggered by different stimuli such as visual, auditory, olfactory or mental (for example a sexual fantasy).

Reflex: produced in response to tactile stimuli in areas of the penis such as the frenulum, glans or foreskin.

Nocturnal: spontaneous erections occur in some phases of sleep.
