At 6'1 145-150lbs, I'm looking to beef it up a bit. I've been skinny my whole life but and have tried many attempts at gaining weight. I think I've been doing it wrong because nothing has worked so I'm trying to focus on eating the right foods rather shoving whatever I can down my throat. I also bought a little bench press/squat station as well to work out. Anyone have any good links to read up on as far as what us skinny guys should include in our diets? I've heard pasta was good to eat because it doesn't keep you full long and it has a lot of carbs. Not sure what the carbs do but, I've been eating a lot of it the past couple of days and yea, it definitely doesn't keep you full at all lol. If anyone's got some good reading material, I'd appreciate it.

ok so essentially all you need to do is workout hard, and eat alot. a common complaint with skinny guys is that they're eating loads but not gaining weight. however, being skinny warps the perception of what a lot of food is. whatever youre eating, if youre not gaining weight then you need to eat more (unless you have a thyroid problem which is fairly rare).

pasta is NOT a very efficient bulking for someone who struggles to eat alot. what you want to focus on is fatty foods, as per gram fat has alot more calories than both carbs and protein, and is pretty easy to eat alot of. e.g. one tablespoon of olive oil has around 160 calories. you also want to get adequate protein in, as it will be needed for muscle growth. you dont need to focus on carbs at all, as they are so abundant. if you get a decent amount of fat and protein in you will likely get enough carbs as most meals include a carb source (oats, pasta, rice, potatoes, grains - all usually make up a part of a meal).

if you will be counting calories, aim for 3000. add more if you dont gain weight off of this after a couple of weeks. if you dont want to count, just eat fairly similar things from day to day or week to week, and if its not gaining you weight, eat more.

as for programs, you'll wanna get on a program that is in line with your goals. what are your goals? i would also say that you should buy the basics: an olympic bar, a rack, some weights, and a bench. this will go very far in terms of building a physique.

Thanks for the info. I do have a bench with a squat station attached to it. I've never been to the gym before but, I've given it a couple of test runs and I'm freaking sore. I'm really hoping I can create a good diet plan and keep at it. Working out seems to increase my appetite as well so hopefully that helps. I was looking into protein powders since I can't get my recommended intake based on food alone. Any recommendations as far as what to look for in a powder? There's so many of them out there.

that soreness is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and will happen after every workout for a few weeks until you get conditioned, where you will then not get very sore.

you should be focusing on just eating eating eating. eat till you're full, then eat some more. as far as protein powders go, go for any basic whey protein. dont buy the expensive stuff, youre only paying for the brand. a brand i like is myprotein (both uk and us), however i only like some of the flavours. pick a flavour you think will be a safe bet and go with that.

Warm milk with bananas chopped in. Boil it drink the milk and then eat the bananas.

I was checking amazon out for protein powders and saw one that one unflavored. It didn't have as much protein in it as some of the other powders (per serving) but, I'd really like to stay away from the flavored stuff that way I can add it to anything. Do you know of any out there that you would recommend?

from personal experience i wouldn't go with unflavoured. its ok if youre mixing it with some other things in a big shake, but you cant drink it on its own it tastes gross. make sure when you look up protein powders, you get whey protein. dont buy a blend or any other form as it will likely be either ovepriced, or poor quality sources of protein. go for concentrate (80%) whey protein, best value for money.

im assuming you live in america so i dont know of many cheap brands out there (im in the uk). myprotein have a us store though: Impact Whey Protein

just look around for some good offers or find a cheap good quality store

pedud - I recommend this program StrongLifts 5x5, it's great for a true novice. Everything is on the website to get started.

Low carb diet is important and useful for skinny people. Simple diet food like fruits and vegetables are best in every situation of a person. These are best diet food i must say.

bad advice. carb are good for skinny people. also, fruits and vegetables are carbs, so that is a contradiction
