Yowzers! PEGYM Hacked?

They've been down for like a week. First for maintenance. Now citing a "major data corruption". Sounds like a hack job to me.

Just corruption bug within the system. They're still trying to find it

WHAT???

This ain't the matrix. With a DB back up, any system can be brought up within hours.

At min. they should be doing a DB back up 1x a week, therefore any issue should be resolved within hours.

That's if you know where the fault in the DB is. If you need to locate it, then it is more a needle in a haystack operation.

I don't think you understand how DB's work.

If hes got backups(which he should,if he doesn't then it's one of the dumbest things ever) then it doesn't matter where the "fault " is. You go restore the backup that was last working properly. End of story. It's not rocket science. With backups I can gut your server to the bone and you would be up in 1 hour max.

Unless he's being DDOS(and PE isn't) then he's got legal issues or other issues not related to technical issues.

A week will greatly hurt a forum, any longer than that and the site will take months to get back to where they were. I pray for BgAl that he gets things straightened out. We have never lost more than 4 days and since we have installed 3 dedicated servers we are never down but for maintenance.

Depends on where the issue exists, and if it is one that manifested immediately (in which case, just restore the last known good backup or the transaction logs until that point. If the error is more systemic that had been around for a while, it might take longer to locate. Also depends on if they are willing to give up all data past a certain point, or they are attempting to locate the individual record that is causing the corruption...latter would take significantly longer.

Granted I agree that it is odd it is taking them this long...just trying to think of a technical reason it might be occurring, but I am starting to wonder myself actually.

Go on today. Now it looks like a traditional DDOS attack.

Yes, it is very expensive ($1000.00 plus a month not including tech support) but the forum is EXTREMELY valuable and the investment is worth saving data and all the hard work the Brothers have done. [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MOS[/words] is the most valuable asset we all have, we need to protect it with everything we have!

One thing I've learned from my time around the online PE community...since late 1999....we always persevere. I've seen other "big" forums lost temporarily and they recovered.

If a forum looses two weeks of posting there is little chance that forum will return. Remember Big Al's first site was HUGE until the corruption happened and they lost a couple weeks of posts and never recovered. In the end PEGym really saved that site. If you own a forum it is vital to take every possible precaution to save data. In our case we will never lose more than 12 hours and that is at it's worst, usually we are up within 30 minutes. We have great techs, 3 dedicated servers and a shit ton of ammunition for those who try to hack.

Yea, we don't have to worry around here. My own forum isn't that busy, for good reasons. Mainly, it's just a place to host my how to material. That's all backed up on physical and cloud storage. I can literally have a new forum up in an hour.
