Actually, that is a popular misconception. While an episiotomy will help prevent tears during childbirth and pelvic floor problems in the future, it won't tighten things up. I've asked an ob/gyn. I wish it were true though.

On a funny note, the same ob/gyn told me about patients having "repairwork" done in middle age. Then, i think there is some tightening up. In fact sometimes women will bring in a dildo that's the husband's size to make sure the fit is still good. Now, if you were the husband. Yes episiotomy does seem to tighten it up,after each of our two kids my wife told the doctor to give her an xtra stitch,the doctor looked at her like she was crazy, she was already pretty tight before having children.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but the doctor probably did think your wife was crazy. An episiotomy can only make the skin tighter at best and we all know how the skin can stretch.
