Hello all,

I am a young college student who needs some advice on starting a business. I am a computer tech and work with computers all the time as a side job(housecalls) and corporate calls etc. to fix up their PC's. I do this as a side job off the "books" and really want to make it a legit business but dont really know how to. I live in NYC and have clientele including all the services i have to offer but i dont know if a need some kind of certification or licenses to have a computer business. Also i dont know what to do first, like do i go to city hall and apply for some kind of certicate of business?. I think i would have a sole propietorship. I already have the company name and all. Sorry for the ranting but i am really tired(reading small business articles etc) and have some clients in the morning. So any help with helping me start out this business would be TRULY appreciated. Thank you all and have a GREAT NIGHT!

No problem. :) That's just for starters. The easy part really. Talk to other computer guys and ask for business advice. Simple things like how you bill parts verses services as there are possible different tax liabilities. The worst part IMO about being self employed is the personal taxes. Damn convenient when they're just taken out of your check, pain in the ass when you have to write that quarterly estimated payment. I'm in California so things might be different, but feel free to ask with any questions. :)
