Suppose a person like me has a million-dollar idea, but makes less than 30K and truly lives paycheck to paycheck. How do you raise capital for such a venture? I am sure there are books on the subject, but I thought maybe someone here has actually done it or has some expertise.

Does your idea require allot of money to start up(machinery involved etc.,etc.)The more people you involve in the money part, will be a big hassle!Even the banks are a pain! When it comes to people investing, they feel they should have a say in what's what. And stay away from asking family, as it has created many divided families, over the sake of money.Even if you try to sell your idea to an investor, there is always that chance he will run with your idea. When money is involved, there are no morals!Give us a rough idea of what you need to get it going, but keep the idea close to your chest! It would be great to see you make a mint!!

depends on the profit margins of your venture.

If they are steep, borrow, using whatever collateral you can.

If you will pay the loan slowly, get family and friends in on the deal.

+/- private investors.

It is a sort of sporting entertainment idea. I would need a location and camera crews to get some awesome footage for marketing and stuff. I have no idea what I'm looking at, but it wouldn't surprise me if it would near one million dollars.

I don't know much about business, but for getting a cheap film-team and equipement you could ask filmstudents or start a co-op with a movie-class.
I know a guy who's filmstudent and he told me they often (have to) work for free just to be able to get some practice. The equipement they can probably borrow from their movie-class if they are good with the teacher.

My opionion is that.....you shouldn't invest that much money...almost a million dollars and its not even a franchise? Or is it? You won't make money for a couple of years....Best bet would be to start a networking business that has low start up and overhead costs. Not a pyramid or MLM though....but what? You would have to get up with me and chat:)

The investment would not be my money entirely. That's why I was asking about raising capital, but I know it's tough.

My mind is constantly churning new entrepreneurial ideas. In my mind exists a line of clothing, a line of snack foods, a brand of beer, nutritional supplements, and several other thing that just don't come to mind right this second that I have mulled over the years.

Well, you need to do something thats market driven, products that sell and aren't in danger of fad or trend swings. Also think of how you're going to get the product to the people....The business I'm in pays commision for business volume, and of course retail profit. I sell nutritional suppliments...they are always in high demand.

There are several way's to raise capitol.

1) try investing in the stock market when the market is down, and on the way up, like it is today.

2) have lots of garage sales.

3) sell scrap metals like copper, zinc, and brass.

4) get the wife to go onto street has a pro.

5) start a MLM company, get all your mates to invest their hard earned cash.

6) creat a loose your money club, get a few hundred suckers to invest in it.

Just to name a few.

What are you paying per trade? I'm getting killed at 9.99-14.95 per trade from Share-builder and TD Amertirade. Stocks are crazy today!
