I would think at least 2 1/4 to 2.5 inches across would appear large. I would think you could be wide (horizontally) without being deep (vertically).

yeah im about 2 inches wide (thickest midshaft part) and im 6.25" girth, so 2.5" would prob be 7" or more in girth, on average...............
