Ocd sucks

DLD I have OCD for a lot of the same reasons you had it for. Mine's a little different as I obsess about numbers b/c to me, numbers=inches. Every number I see I translate it to inches..You can see how difficult it is for me to watch sports on TV! Ultimately I'm frustrated with my average size. Anyways, they put me on 40 mg prozac and I've been on that for a month with little help. You were on Prozac...how many milligrams did you find to be an effective dose for your OCD? What other medications have you found helpful with obsesive/unwanted thoughts? Thanks DLD

Hey GOALBIG,

I know that you were personally asking DLD about the OCD medications. I am also OCD, and even though mine is focused around germs, I know how horrible the obsessions and compulsions are. I went a stretch of 3 years not leaving the house and eating only bread and drinking water... The first thing they did for me was also put me on Prozac, which I found did nothing for me. I hear that it is a great medication for some, and others it just does not work as well for OCD. After 5 medication changes I finally was put on Citalopram (celexa) which worked amazing for me, but the dose was around 180mg and not every doctor would write that prescription.

Of course I'm not a doctor or anything, but I would think that a month might not be long enough for you to see any real effects. I also noticed that only through medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, was I able to truly change my OCD and stop with the obsessing and the compulsive behavior. I hope that you are not just relying on medication to take care of your obsessions. The medicine helped to slow down the obsessions, but everything else I had to learn through a long time of pretty harsh and grueling therapy.

Thats just some of my experiences, but I know where you are coming from. I wish you good luck, and hope that you can find something that works for you because I know how much of a nightmare it can be!

Thanks Johnny..I'll bring up Celexa in a couple weeks if Prozac doesnt do anything for me. Sounds like you had a tough few years. It woulda been tough to go a week without a cold one. Good for you in getting over it.
I've been seeing a therapist for a few months now and he tells me great things that I need to be putting to work. I've failed to do so b/c I've trained my brain to think this way and its hard to untrain it. He once recommended exposure therapy where they expose you to your OCD. EX: someone who is afraid of bridges they will show em pics of bridges or bring them to bridges etc..I was like "what are you gonna do, show me pics of cocks??" haha.. Anyways I appreciate the support.

Yes, exposure training is also amazing, unfortunately in my case, I couldn't do it because they could do it with me because of the type of OCD that I was struggling with. I know what you mean about even though you are learning great tools from a therapist, that it is hard to change the way that you have been thinking for such a long time.

The good thing is that with your joke at the end about "pictures of cocks" that you still have a sense of humor about it. Its a tough and crazy disorder, but some of my biggest changes were made after I could learn to laugh at myself for the the things that I was doing which made absolutely no sense at all.

You will get through it, its a process but it will happen if you work at it. Its a great idea to bring up CBT, ACT, different meds, any possible treatment so that you can find a plan that works best for you!

bummer mines not severe in the phhysical sense like with door knobs or germs but mentally im fucked up..I wonder if they would take a patient with severe obsessive thoughts

No, it is never a problem but there are times, rarely, where two people will ask the identical question in the same day and I will get spun:)

OCD, as I must have told you, needs to be used to the advantage of the seemingly afflicted, if it is seen through a different light and it's advantages are mastered it is a very powerful gift.
