Need some help and support from fellow Quitters!

Hello all.

I really, really would appreciate some IM or emails over the next few from guys who have quit smoking and stayed quit. Today is my day. I have decided to go cold turkey as all my research has shown that long-term quitters, people who have never went back, were people who quit cold turkey. The next 3 days will be the hardest as my nicoteen levels in my blood drop way below "normal" and the chemicals in my brain rush to adapt.

I realized over the last few days that I am a junkie. I am an addict. That's all there is to it. I am tired of feeling and smelling like shit. I am tired of having to explain to my child that smoking is bad and only idiots intentionally poison themselves all the while puffing away on the porch.

C'mon guys. Find a few seconds over the next few days to show me some support and encouragement. I plan to live on my computer over the next few days reading different forums and drinking lots of juice and water.
Anyone feel like joining me on this life-changing decision?

Thanks
kook

Hi kooky, I gave up smoking about one and a half years ago. I quit cold turkey and agree that it's the best way. Now I'm not smoking I have more energy and generally feel much better than I did whilst smoking. I found that the best way to get over it was to eat a piece of chewing gum every time I craved for a cigerette. It seems to help occupy the mind. Might sound weird but it worked for me.

Good Luck!!!!

I wish you the best bro... my dad smoked for over 30 years and died from smoking induced cancer, you don't want to put your kids thru that. It's good that you're quitting before your health suffers. I'm also glad that you made the decision to stop being a hypocrite to your kids and quit finally quit smoking. Peace brother... you're doing the right thing for you and your family.

I agree with Sikdogg. My dad died from enlarged heart due from smoking cigs and drinking. I was 12 at the tough. Tough on the family. Just something to remind you of the consequences when ever you start to crave. I'm glad you decided to take a stand. We're here for your support and wish you well.

Koooky Hey I am glad to see that you have decided to quit I have been developing a plan for quitting I will be quitting in two weeks. I have been smoking for over 30 years and have developed empheyzema and last Oct had to have a stent put in my heart after having a mild heart attack. I have been fighting with myself on this for about two years now. wish you the best of luck.

i smoked for 18 yrs and smoked 2 packs a day then quit for 8 yrs. cold turkey is hard but it can be done. just try not to reach for food as an aid in quitting like i did. the weight comes quick and its hard as hell to get rid of.

One tip that I have heard before (never smoked, other than "try it") is to drop and do pushups, situps, or whatever like mad whenever you get the urge. The focus on your exercise will help take your mind off the cravings and will do so that much more when you start to feel the burn and exhaustion. You might also find yourself huffing and puffing and the sucking in air you'll be doing will help get air in the lungs and may help relieve the craving.

BTW, how have you done? Give us an update. Don't feel bad if you have failed. Hey, you got a New Year to make your resolutions and get this done.

You phrased that "for 8 yrs.", so did you ever go back? Just curious.
yes i did ,my wife started to smoke two years ago, and the temptation was too great, so i picked it up again, something i deeply regret, the coughing and weezing from smoking really sucks, but i too am in the process of quitting in the new year.

Are you getting her to quit too? It would be a big help to your efforts, but I guess she's got to want it for herself.

I always thought that I could never see myself kissing a smoker and that the smell/taste would be unbearable. But after a one-night stand with one a few months ago, it actually didn't seem to bother me. I really couldn't smell it in her hair, though she smoked constantly before we went back to my room (smoke free, where she did not smoke). Yet, I personally can't deal with the smell on my clothes. To me, there ain't nothing worse than when you head out to the bars for a night and wake-up to smell those clothes the next day.

No offense meant here to anyone. I know it's got to be hard as hell to quit and I know not everyone is as turned off by the smell of smoke as I personally am. Good luck to all those that try to kick the habit this year.
