This is inspired by the TV shows thread. Post your favorite films here. If its obscure, tell a bit about it, like the director, year, genre, etc. Also if any movie has especially good music, say that (I'm studying film scoring in college). Also if the movie has a particularly gorgeous actress (I don't mean the modern fake Britney Lopez or Christina Jolie. I mean like Audrey Hepburn, Terri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Hurley...yum). A few of my favorites are:

Life is Beautiful
Doctor Zhivago
Vertigo
Psycho
Casablanca
To Catch a Thief
The Pianist
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Dead Poets Society
Citizen Kane
The Matrix (the first one)
Moulin Rouge
Final Fantasy (especially the score...Eliot Goldenthal is the man!)
Star Wars (the original 3)
Jurassic Park (all 3, but especially #1)
Young Frankenstein
History of the World, part 1
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (can you tell I'm a Mel Brooks fan?)
Monty Python's Holy Grail
Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
The Shawshank Redemption
Much Ado About Nothing (the one with Michael Keaton)
Gladiator
Lord of the Rings (all 3)

Those were in no particular order. Post away!

Un Homme et Une Femme: Dir. Claude Lelouch 1964

La Belle et Le Bete: Dir. Jean Cocteau 194? (Nazi-occupied Paris; you'd never know it from the film: this movie has been visually copied so often as to make it almost a cliche)

8 1/2: Federico Fellini

Sanjuro
Yojimbo
Ran
all by Akira Kurosawa

Manhattan: Woody Allen

Two of the best modern films are both Roman Polanksi's: Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown (the score of which, Cyclops, is perfect)

Recent films that I admired are Swimming Pool (starring Charlotte Rampling, a 'most beautiful' woman ever in film: see Georgy Girl); Lost in Translation; the Ring Trilogy; and The Royal Tenenbaums (a terrific soundtrack).

Also:

American Graffiti
Desk Set
A Hard Day's Night
Seven
12 Monkeys
Anniversary Party
FIGHT CLUB
Erin Brockovich

Another 'most beautiful' actress: Julie Christie. See Darling directed by John Schlesinger, and Doctor Zhivago (David Lean) from the same year. And Shampoo.

(I just discovered Columbo on television.)

Braveheart
Last of the Mohicans
Oceans 11

Some you reminded me of.

David...you're a foreign film guy? Sweet. I never was until recently, so I don't really know which ones to get. That gives me a good start. Thanks. And yeah, isn't Julie Christie gorgeous? The first time I saw her was in Doctor Zhivago. Stunning. Which reminds me:

Fahrenheit 451

BTW RED, one of my teachers was the music editor for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He worked a lot with Michael Kamen (the composer, who just died a few months ago unfortunately...he was only in his 50s). The teacher's name is Eric Reasoner. You'll see his name in the credits. He worked on a bunch of other films as a music editor. Die Hard 3, Lethal Weapon 3 and 4, Swing Kids...some others.

About to watch Silence of the Lambs...good stuff. Anthony Hopkins is such a great actor.

Fahrenheit 451 was actually a foreign film: directed by Francois Truffaut, and I think was his first English-language film. (I love that movie and Christie is terrific in the dual roles.) Truffaut made The 400 Blows and was a major participant of the French new wave of cinema in the 50s. You might recognize him as the French 'scientist' in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Yeah, I love movies.

Boogie Nights? (nobody mentions that? I thought this was Penis Enlargement message board) rofl
Taxi driver
Midnight Cowboy (Have to have dreams truly squashed to appreciate it)
City of God (brazillian film-fucking raw-based on a true strory of teenage street gangs)
Kingpin
Blazing Saddles (I wish they could still make a comedy this un p.c. today)
Bad santa (Pretty un-p.c. but no blazing saddles)
Kill Bill
Pulp Fiction
Reservior Dogs
The big Lebowski ("this is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass"
Silence of the lambs
The Naked Gun
The Color of Money
The Killing (Stanley Kubrick 1956 film noir uses a Tarantino non linear structure
Rear Window
Psycho
The Toxic Avenger
Class of nuk'em high
They live
The Wicker Man (Brutal ending)
Color of Money
American Movie (Documentary on joe scHydromaxo tying to make a film)
Bowling for Columbine
The Shining
Trading Places
Raging Bull
12 monkeys
Time Bandits (How can you go wrong with six british dwarfs on the run)Wally!!
True Romance (Directors cut to see Gandolfini beat Patricia Arquette)
Arlington Road (great ending)
No way out (1987 one of the most suspenful you'll ever see)
Field of Dreams
Dirty Harry
Buffalo 66 (Great cast, great structure)
Vision Quest
Bowfinger
The Jerk (Steve Martin 1979)
Creepshow
Gladiator
One flew over the cuckoos nest
Shawshank redemption
Carrie
Amores Perros (The Spanish Pulp Fiction)
Seven
In America (Tearjerker)
My left foot (anytime you complain about your dick size watch this movie, and you'll stop complaining...Very depressing though)
Midnight express (same thing,don't complain)
Born on the fourth of july (....don't complain)
Love Object (Indie saw at Tribeca film fest - guy buys $5,000 realdoll sex doll modeled after a coworker creepy dark and funny)
Full metal jacket
Dead Presidents
Revenge of the nerds
Groundhog day
Chuck and Buck (Creepy yet funny indie)
Happiness (Sick yet true)(Blockbuster won't carry)
Storytelling
Rocky1-4
Casino
Punch Drunk Love (Adam sandler actually acts)
Cruising (Al pacino goes under cover as a gay sex fiend to catch a serial killer-worth it just for seeing pacino dancing like a mad man in a hardcore gay bar) rofl
American Psycho
Virgin Suicides
The last American Virgin (1981 there's a penis measurement lockerroom competition, tone gets darker-hell of an ending)
The last Detail (early 70s vintage nicholson)
Marathon Man (is it safe?)
Star 80 (great film proves Eric Roberts shits on his sister Julia)
The salton sea (2001 val kilmer)
The basketball diaries
Stripes
Caddyshack
Animal House
Real men (john ritter Jim Belushi)
Love Liza (Indie-Phil seymour Hoffmans wife kills her self and he gets hooked on huffing gasoline to deal with the pain....hilarious and dark-hoffman is king)
The kid stays in the picture (actually listen to the book on tape, its better)

I guess that's enough for now....Damn I watch alot of movies...guess that's why I'm gonna make it a career

Need to see more foreign films though...I haven't seen enough yet...Please list some of the better ones.

Oh yeah man that was a great film. Good book too.

Turk, your post reminded me of some. Simone...not an incredibly good film, but much overlooked IMO (and just came on, on Starz Theater {and I love the way the score starts with a choral arrangement of Barber's Adagio for Strings}), and I love Al Pacino's acting. And Scent of a Woman was great too. What are you doing in film? If you ever need a composer, I'm your man, right? rofl Seriously, though...if you ever are looking for one, drop me a PM.

I am just gonna drop a few in:

Seven(the best)
Apocalypse Now
American History X
Magnolia(great)
LOTR all 3
Raging bull
Big Lebowsky
Trainspotting
Last of the Mohicans
Mullholand drive (Lynch is a genius)

The list could go on forever

Seems Seven and Sharshank R''' are the top ones.
SEVEN is the best chiller ever made, it hammers silence of the lambs IMHO which isnt as good as Hannibal, I thought SOTL was somewhat over-rated, but still very good indeed......just lacks its long lasting appeal to me, I have seen it 4 times compared to hannibal ... I seen it 10 times and will watch it again, the music is also FANTASTIC, great Italian opera.

Yeah RED the SOTL is great. It is the best of the trilogy. I didn't like the Red Dragon at all. I was quite dissapointed. Well I see that you are on the board. Did you watch the Reds game on Tuesday. Man it sucks they fell out of the game. They were very close.

Yep I sAw it ... was DEVASTATED MAN.
1 MINUTE TO GO and them portugal bastards lol score
Damn, it should never have been a freekick, they were DIVING all night long, bastards .... robbing bastards.
We had a perfect onside goal disallowed, Its a sham.
Utd's USA goalkeeper wasnt to blame for that goal, he made a GREAT save I think, but the rebound was to quick and close.

Man Utd were robbed plain and simple, we won if that goal wasnt dis-allowed.
Now Europe is GONE.
We wont win the League , we are too far behind now....its the FA cup, and thats gunna be hard cos we got Arsenal who are VERY GOOD.

turkzilla:

Thanks for mentioning Punch Drunk Love: that is a great film that seems to have been overlooked. The role was written for Sandler (Isn't this Paul Thomas Anderson: Magnolia: Boogie Nights?) and he is terrific and the actress who plays his sister (name?) has an amazing time with a small role.

What aspect of filmmaking are you pursuing?

Fuck those referees man, that goal was legal man. No way that was an offside. It showed perfectly in slo-mo. It's a shame man. I love Reds. Now it's just the damn Spaniards and the Italian macaronies in the league. This sucks.
And that Carlos dude was fuckin' diving all the game.
It's a shame, but every club has it's ups and downs. I think that Ruud is not in the top form.

I'll get it back on track...

I consider myself quite the film buff, so I'll just include a few from all sorts of genres that are personal favorites (otherwise I'd post for hours):

Frenzy
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
Gaslight
Vanishing Point
The 3rd Man
Citizen Kane
Lawrence of Arabia
The Conversation
Groundhog Day
L.A. Confidential
Straw Dogs
The Wild Bunch
Shane
Ride the High Country
Casino
Heat
An American Werewolf in London

david-
I saw punch drunk in the theater and enjoyed it, ironically there was a group of older (in there 50s) she made it clear that they thought it was horrible...One of the woman went so far as to demand her money back..so maybe a lot of naive people just didnt' get it, or couldn't buy sandler in a straight role, although I thought he pulled it off.
Originally Paul thomas Anderson was supposed to be developing a film with sandler based on an old SNL sketch with Shannon Doherty called "The Denise show", about a loser trying to get back his girlfriend....that never happened so I guess this grew out of it.
It actually screened in Brooklyn NY, with a Q and A with P.T. Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, following the film unfortunately it sold out quickly. >:(

The actress who plays his sister is Mary Lynn Rajskuh she was in Storytelling and played a blind girl in Road Trip.

I am pursuing writing/directing and acting. I've written quite a number of screenplays, and have directed some no budget digital video films.
I never went to film school, I guess I learned by doing. I'm still learning and I'm in the process of polishing a couple scripts to send out to agencies/producers, just trying to get my foot in the door.

What about you?

I can't understand how people can miss out on such richness of style and content just because they can't 'accept' a comedic actor. The same thing was happening with Lost in Translation: I was amazed at the decision to sell it as a comedy when I had been so moved by it. Of course, on second viewing I was struck by Murray's incredible comic timing and how funny it really was at moments.

Mary Lynn Rajskuh is also terrific in a tiny moment in The Anniversary Party. Have you seen it?

I never studied film but having grown up in Los Angeles I've had my close encounters including a job or two in the industry.

One of my closest friends graduated from UC film school and taught me a lot when I was in my early twenties: many screenings and many film festivals.

Basically, I'm just a cinephile.

More faves:

The Misfits (Dir. John Huston)
The Grifters
Barfly
8 Women
Gangs of New York/The Age of Innoncence/Goodfellas (Is this Scorcese's New York trilogy?)

Never saw the anniversary party, I know it was shot on digital video, I plan on checking it out.
The grifter's was great, haven't seen it in like ten years though (love the scene where cusack gets caught by the bartender trying to switch the twenty)
Barfly is good as well, i wish Rourke could get his shit together, he used to be pretty good.
Love Goodfellas, and gangs of NY, never saw age of innocence. I'd watch a women giving birth if scorcese filmed it.

This thread is pretty cool, I' ve already found out about some films that I had never even heard of before

Donny Darko was interesting, don't know if anyone listed that yet.

Donnie Darko - yeah, that was an interesting flick. I hear that a director's cut will be coming out on [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/mosdvd.htm]DVD[/words] this April.

Anyone ever see Ghost World?

Oh yeah Donnie Darko was really good. Has anyone seen B. Monkey? Its a British film...Asia Argento (very good in this movie...and hot), Jared Harris, Rupert Everett, Jonathan Rhys Meyers (also good). I recommend it.

Ghost World had that great cast. I can't take my eyes of Scarlet Johansen, even if she isn't the strongest actress in the box.

Have you seen either of the documentaries 'Crumb' or 'American Splendor'? You'd like them both if you liked Ghost World, I think. I liked 'American Splendor' tremendously. The two films would be a fitting double feature.

Yeah, I've seen both. I must say though that I did not really care for American Splendor. It was a visually appealing movie, but I simply could not care less what heppened to the characters, hence wasn't all too impacted from the movie.

Crumb is a great documentary...haven't seen American splendor yet but plan on renting it soon.
Terry Zwigoff directed Crumb and Ghost world, he also did Bad Santa more recently. I thought bad santa was pretty damn funny, pretty ballsy for studio for in these "politically correct" times.

Snatch is cool as well, but I think it has too many cuts, it's like a full length MTV video, which is fine for now, but I think in like ten years it'll look extremely dated, I still own the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/mosdvd.htm]DVD[/words] and enjoy it though.

I could make a long list but these are my top 3:

1. Fight club (Brad Pitt and Ed Norton are amazing in that movie, aswell as the actual story and twist, I think Ed Norton is one of, if not the best character actors at this time, I mean look at him in American History X, Fight Club, Primal Fear, I can't believe that it's the same guy!)

2. Minority Report (everyone I know hates this movie but I thought that the story and twists were amazing, also, this is my favourite genre, future sci-fi, things like Demolition Man, Total Recall, Judge Dredd, though Minority Report is my favourite.

3. any of the James Bond films, I am a BIG James Bond fan especially Sean Connery, my favourite is "You only live twice"

Is Snatch the one firected by Lock Stock and Smoking Barrels director? Pitt does that unintelligible Irish accent? I love Pitt.

Turk, I laughed out loud at your Scorsese comment and completely agree with you. Goodfellas and Raging Bull? Major American films.

And gave you seen recent photos of good old Mickey Rourke? Man, I remember loving Rumblefish and those Coppola movies of the SE Hinton books.

back to the future 1
fight club
scarface
he got game
bottle rocket

i didnt think donnie darko was that good. i thought it was entertaining in terms of effects and imagery but it wasnt enough to make up for a weak plot that really wasnt that deep. it was obvious, not that interesting, or even really necessary and relied too much on the old "really smart weird kid" mantra. it was funny though to see patrick swaze get arrested for having a child adult entertainment "dungeon."

HOOP DREAMS[The Best Movie I've EVer Seen!]
He Got Game[Basketball!]
The Shawshank Redemption[Great!]
Remember The Titans[Yes!]
Amistad[A Must See!]
Se7en[Yeah!]
Driving Miss Daisy[A Classic!]
The Atlanta Child Murders[!!!]
American History X[Good!]
Mama Flora's Family[Against the odds!]

There are so many movies, i dont feel for write more ;)

what about films with a suprising twist or "ballsy" endings
I'll list a few without giving anything away,

The Wicker Man and The Last American Virgin - both had unexpected, surprise endings that would not be found in a typical Hollywood film of today. Great choices!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Great Escape
The Hustler
Just about any movie with Steve McQueen (Arguably the coolest actor ever)
Dirty Harry series
Kelly's Heros
Dirty Dozen
Night Shift
Blazing Saddles
Sean Connery's Bond flicks
Fifth Element
Die Hard
Stalag 17
Tora, Tora, Tora

Damn, too many to remember.

As far as older actresses, Audrey Hepburn was stunning, as was Vivien Leigh.

(This category would include one of my favorite genres -- the heist flick)

The Crying Game
The Postman Always Rings Twice (either version)
The Spanish Prisoner (Wr./Dir. David Mamet)
Heist (Wr./Dir. David Mamet)
The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three

Speaking of Mamet, has anyone seen State and Main?

Yes - I loved it...hysterical.

Also, speaking of Mamet, has anyone seen Spartan? (in theatres now) ;)

BTW, nice pick on The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 - a favorite of mine!

pelham 1,2,3 is great.

Anyone seen Kubricks "The killing", great film, it reminded me a lot Pelham
Of course man - my all-time favorite Kubrick film (and favorite Sterling Hayden movie). QT "borrowed" from this movie considerably with Resiorvoir Dogs too.

I can't recall The Killing other than some incredible images of Pennsylvania Station before it was demolished. Am I right?

I like Sterling Hayden and I'm glad Kubrick used him again in Strangelove.

What about the work of Sam Fuller? Now there's some interesting stuff.

I just managed to see the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/mosdvd.htm]DVD[/words] of Kill Bill Vol I... what a great movie. If you're a fan of Kurosawa or anime or John Ford you'll like it, and chances are you won't be put off by the theatrical violence. I found it to be epic.

Can't wait to get to the Arclight and see Vol II. Anyone heard of that theater? It's fkkn terrific. Huge spaces between rows, incredible sound and prints, even a moderator before each screening who introduces the film then sticks around to make sure the timing, sound, etc are optimal.

I still haven't seen the first one. It's high on my list of films to see, so probably this week or next week if I get time between finals and projects and rehearsals and recitals and all that stuff.

I saw both Vol 1 and II. When all is said and done, I can't say I liked one more than the other - both were utterly fantastic and cinematic achievements.

Has anyone seen Man on Fire yet? I was going to see it this past weekend, but didn't have the time, so I'll probably go this coming weekend. I hope it's on par with Denzel's last movie - Out of Time - now that was a good, little movie!
