Just got laid off

I just got my one week notice at my job...I am a student working full-time on my campus...i really don't do shit but sit on the computer and answer the phone when it rings..but i work at night 4:30 -12:30....they told me they are trying to cut down on some of their overhead so they have to let me go...i felt bad for a minute cuz i really need to work....i need money for my rent...which i am way overdue on...my sons mother need money to get her own apartment...right now her and my son are staying with family and it is a fucked up situation so i need to help them get out of there...but as easy as my job is...i don't like it...i sit down in a office for 8 hrs...wasting away...i literally get on [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]mos[/words] and stay on it until i get off work...the only benefit i see from my job is internet access, access to a copier machine (which i use regularly for class notes and stuff) and obviously the pay check...but i guess i have more time for myself and pe...i don't know anything about unemployment i guess i could try to get it until i find something else...but there are not a lot of job opportunities in the town i am in...most of the town works where i work or a couple of other places...and the fact i don't have a car and i don't like to depend on anyone else i need something close to my house...long story short i need to find another alternative fast

Very sorry to hear that man. I got laid off in 2002 because my job went overseas. Go apply for unemployment after your last day. Be sure to take a paper with you from your job stating that your being laid off. This will speed things up a little. I forget what its called...A "Letter of Seperation" i think it was...Anyway, my life has been a nightmare since my layoff. i went from making enough to pay all my bills , which wasnt much, and groceries each week for my wife and 2 kids, having mabey 20 bucks left each week....to doing OK for 2 years because my wife went to work to help after the kids went to school. Then I get laid off, screwed over in a promised severance package and lied to by the government about how they were going to send us to school for anything we wanted for free. It wasnt free, and it wasnt "anything you want to study for",! i had to draw out all of my unemployment before they would spend a dime. I was in school for 1 year and my weekly check for 48 of 52 weeks was MY Unemployment. Then their crappy "TRA" kicked in for the last 4 weeks. It cost the gov. $800.00 total to take my job and pay what they did or my schooling. After graduation, there was no more unemployment and I still havent gotten into the field I studied for. I may be getting on with a paving company in the next few days, so I guess thats good. Better than Nothing. Sorry for the rant, but it just pisses me off to hear of someone loosing their job. Good luck to you.

And it's only going to get worse if you vote for Bush.

Everyone should watch Farenheit 9/11...You will see what the president's agenda really is...which is to make himself and his family and friends as rich as possible...at any cost.

It is frightening to watch our economy continue to decline. As a small business, I depend on all of you guys keeping in work and making a little extra money once bills are paid to blow a little at my store. My sales have steadily declined from $13,000 in Feb to around $8,000 as of last month. It may seem like a lot, but when you cut that in half for inventory, and then pay off all the bills, there's very little left over. It is already the 15th, I have not paid my mortgage or store rent yet and I just had to let the high speed internet at my store (which I use to sell merch online) go because I can't even afford THAT anymore!!!

Time for a new pres. Once again, we see that Reaganomics doesn't work! When will we learn?

so true.. I don't see why we voted bush into office in the first place. His father didn't get relected I don't see why his son would be any better..far worse if you ask me.

I just rented that last night and am still in the process of watching it! It's really thought provoking, and kind of troubling.

Anyway back on topic. Maybe it's a good thing you got laid off if you didn't enjoy your job. Keep looking for a new one in the meantime and you may get lucky and end up with a better job with more pay. Who knows! But the key is to get out there, I was having issues finding a job for awhile myself earlier this year, was getting behind on rent and all that. But keep looking and opportunities will present themself! Good luck!

thanks you guys for the responses....i am going to look for another job but the problem is that i live in a small town where the school is the main attraction...so most of the locals are employed at the school...i don't plan on being down here that long....i have one more semester after this one...hopefully i can tought it out

Yea that sucks bro I just got fired the other day too, and im broke as shit now. It blows. By the way to all the Bush haters. It's not like Kerry is any different. Farenheit 9/11 wasn't as good as everyone though it was. It has some stuff that stands on its own like the Iraqi woman cursing god and the united states, but Moores opinion of what happend on 9/11 doesn't differ any from the governments. Terrrorists didn't just up and decide to bomb the WTC. If any of you get the choice order http://www.infowars.com/videos.html#tyranny .
Kerry and Bush are both servants of power, and I dont see much change if Kerry wins , which he wont.

Yep ...if your small town is like my small town, its all in who you know and suck up to that lands you in a nice job, such as the school you mentioned. Even a janitor position would be nice. Good benifits, government holidays, lots of paid vacation , sick days, insurance...I know what you mean.

Kong, I seen Farenheit 9/11 4 days ago. I thought it was really good. I wasnt aware of some of the things talked about in it such as the Binladin family as well as his half brother being flown out of the US on 9/11 by our government! No questioning or nothing! And daddy Bush had just met with the half brother about their business plans. But as another said, Kerry would probably be no different. Its all about money and power for those involved and the regular citizens are the ones to pay and suffer for their agenda. Its sad to say, and Im not being un-American or anything, but I have lost all faith in our government for a while now. Thats speaking of all of them not just Bush. When the ones in power fail to see the need to help their own citezens with basic needs, such as job security (keeping them here), fair medical care, etc, we are in trouble. And they dont care at all. They spend ungodly amounts of money on unecessary programs, $3000.00 plate dinners, parties, monuments, pay raises to themselves....but yet they keep saying they have no money and take more from us!? Doesnt make sense, it isnt right. If Im low on money in my family ( like right now!) I dont go on a spending spree, but they do. And they try and keep everyone in a state of fear. You cant do that to people for too long. The fear doesnt effect me, but it does alot of people, and one day they will snap. My problem is dealing with the job losses and seeing my family slowly going down hill in the needs dept. Thank God my wife has a job, or we would be in trouble. I feel like less of a man every day that goes by that Im out of work. That might make me snap. I hope things in this country change reall fast. You can only push people so far for so long.

Sorry to hear about that Twins172_up. :/ Hey, at least you have some work experience under your belt (well, even if the job was easy).

Fahrenheit 9/11 was an absolute joke. Oh, it made some good points about how difficult winning the peace in Iraq has been, with language and cultural differences and stuff. But Moore is famous for distorting the truth...on a good day.

Richard Clarke authorized the release of the bin Laden family members and only after the FBI interviewed them. The scene that shows Taliban officials meeting in the White House about the magical pipeline we keep hearing about was from a 1997 meeting between Taliban officials and the Clinton administration.

Four major newspapers did a recount of the 2000 Florida ballots and no one could find a win for Gore, despite the fact that all had endorsed him. Some estimate that Bush lost as many as 12,000 votes when the state was called early for Gore. Many voters did not bother to go to the poles in the highly conservative eastern panhandle of Florida, in the central time zone. Of course, that is only an estimate I've heard, but I think it's safe to say it was significant given the close count of the election. Then the New York Times (hardly a right-wing rag) recently found as many as 30,000 New York residents illegally cast absentee ballots in the state of Florida and over 70% of these residents were registered Democrats. When Moore began the film with the Florida shit, I really lost much hope of getting anything good out of the film. I absolutely guarantee you that not even Al Gore himself actually honestly believes he had Florida stolen from him. I mean, I'm sure he was disappointed as hell as it certainly was close and it makes for good material to rally the troops that don't pay attention to the facts all the time. But Gore cannot actually believe he had the state stolen, or the man is insane. A remarkable effort was made to steal the state, with the army of lawyers the Democrats sent to attempt to block absentee military votes and a telemarketing firm on stand-by ready to convince elderly voters they had voted for Pat Buchanan, on the butterfly ballot that the Democrats designed themselves.

The economy could be better, though it shows some strong signs. Reaganomics was proven to be incredible economic policy in the 1980s, but has not faired as well with the spending in the current administration. Bush has thrown away money left and right at social programs throughout his term. No serious person could really make any convincing argument he is a true conservative. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being hard left and 10 being hard right, I'd give him a 4 at best. Basically, he reminds me too much of Clinton. He keeps his dick in his pants (which I don't care too much about), but he angers me by the fact that the fiscal pocket of his pants has a much bigger hole.

Oh twins, didn't mean to forget about you, bro.

Look, unemployment has sure been much worse. At 5.4%, you should be able to find some work. Check to see if you qualify for unemployment, so you have something to act as your safety net. I know it has to suck, given that you have an obligation to your kid and ex. The fact that you show so much concern there tells me your a man of good integrity. I hope something works out for you.

What part of the country are you located in? Got any skills or interests that could yield you any side work? If you do, I may have some ideas on how I could help you market them.

Kong, I hope business picks up for you too. The economy has grown the past couple of years and I honestly don't think if you've seen a drop from 13K to 8K when unemployment has decreased, it can be attributed to a matter of Bush/Gore or Kerry. Nevertheless, I hope it gets resolved for you in the coming days. Whatever disagreements, I never like reading about personal disappointments in the lives of fellows MOSers, let alone a fellow mod I've gotten to know pretty well. How's the local economy been the past few years and what's the industries your community is built on? Right where I live, everything has been built around the steelmill and the town made the mistake of planning everything around steel, which has been declining for decades for a variety of reasons, throughout various political administrations.

Penguinsfan, i was hoping Moore didnt distort things in this film like he did in Bowling For Columbine. But I see now how he did on some things after reading up on it a while ago. But he did make good points over all and I see where hes coming from. In his other movie he really pissed me off with that cartoon that was in it. I just wish he wouldnt edit things the way he does. But still my thoughts on the economy are from my own experiences not Moores. Good news though, I talked with the road dept. and I may be getting hired next week! It just needs to be aproved by the county. They are slow.....

Not trying to offend anyone, but if you believe all the stuff in Farenheit 9/11 you are retarded. I truly believe everyone has not a right, but a duty to vote; that said, base your vote on facts, not one extremists views. Do your own research and vote how you feel is correct.

Now I haven't posted a lot lately because school has me busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest, but over the last month, I have truly come to detest John Kerry. I have NEVER seen anyone talk so fucking much and say so little (and keep in mind I'm in law school). If he can show me how in the fuck he's gonna pay for hi health care plan without raising taxes, I'll kiss his ass AND vote for him. Admittedly, Bush's economic policies aren't the best ever, but at least we're moving in the right direction. Anyone here with ANY economic education whatsoever can tell you what is going to happen if Kerry raises minimum wage while taxing small businesses-- unemployment and inflation will go up, up, up (kind of like when Carter was in office).

And anyone who thinks decisions about our nation's security should pass a "global test" needs to have their head examined. And as for going into Iraq without a coalition: Bush tried, but the UN wasn't concerned about our safety, the UN wanted to wait (I guess until they had nukes like North Korea). As for our gettig our allies to go with us... as far as I'm concerned, our allies DID go with us, it's just that we didn't have as many allies when we needed something as we did when they needed us.

Listen to the words...Kerry is Scary. And just hearing him talk makes me angry.

Well then you offended me...and Im retarded...LOL! Nah, Im kidding, Im not offended....For me it has come to the point like many others, in I just dont know what to belive anymore or whos telling the truth. I dont really care for Bush or Kerry. They both look the same to me even though they claim to be different. If I were forced to vote I would go with Bush only because of the abortion stance. I dont know what to think. I cant vote against my belifes, but at the same time I have no faith in either one as a politician. I guess Ill be voting with a hope for better times attitude.

Not to worry mate, things could have been worse, I taught Electronic engineeing at a college near where I used to live. I had been there for 14 years. Last day of the course, I was asked to go the office, and was told that I had six hours to clear my office. The college administration said that they had done a lot of research and had discovered that electronic engineering technologist, was no longer a viable trade. At that time I was 54. As I was only 54, I would only get 1/3 of my full pension, I would have recieved full pension had I been 55. Now that is a bastard. You are young, you have the energy, you have the knowledge, and most of all you are willing to work. You should have no problem finding a job. good luck mate

Thats tough. i hate that. Some of the guys at my job when we closed down, missed full retirement by months to even days, as the company changed their retirement rules in the last days. A good friend of mine missed it by 9 days! He had put in 31 years and these pukes wouldnt budge. He cried all day over it. It was sad. Anything new yet Twins172_up?

i appreciate all you guys support...so i came in to work today...my last day is thursday...so they told me that they might have something part-time for me in another department...they are going to look into it...so i'm hopeful...thanks again guys for your concern

I understand what you mean on your experiences with the economy. As I said, my local economy really sucks ass and it's because the people of the community foolishly counted on the steel industry being there forever and completely slept through numerous changes in the economy. I think Fahrenheit 9/11 was actually a worse movie, in terms of being a hatchet job on the truth. Of course, there were a few good points. I am as pro-gun as anyone on the planet and I'll even say there were a few good points made in Bowling For Columbine. The world is a tough place and shit happens, so even the most outrageous piece of propaganda may have elements of a legitimate argument on some level. Hope that job with the road departement works out for you.

Yes when a person gets liad off close to his retirement time they are normally to old to get another position in the same field and it fucks you for life. This is terrible 31 years of service and little pension to show for it.

true,He tried looking for work but after a year of no one wanting him ( due to age ) hes gave up. He just sits at home now and is very sad and depressed. He did get medical coverage at 80% for $25.00 a month at the closing, but those bastards cut that earlier this year for not only him but for all living persons on their company plan. Hes had to drop it because for him and his wife it was going to go to $246 a month...just for himself only was going to be $172 a month. This company BTW was Levi Strauss..Boycott the fuck out of them! Our plant was one of the only ones left on the west side of the Mississippi. Fucking bastards! I hope they lose their asses!!

today is my last day here..they are giving me my vacation days which comes up to about a week...so i will be getting another check from them which is good....i met with another division of the same company...this is the food service part..he said to check with him on tuesday to see if he have a part-time position open for me...i hope it comes through...wish me luck
