Has anyone ever had to file bankruptcy?

I don't want to get into too many details about my personal life, but I might have to consider bankruptcy before the changes in the laws due to some drastic unforeseen setbacks in my life.

Has anyone here had to do this? Can you share a little about your situation and how it has helped your life, what the consequences were, and how things are going for you now?

I have a couple of buddies that have filed for bankruptcy. They both said that it was the best thing they ever did. They were still able to finance cars and even got credit cards less than a year later. I always thought that bankruptcy destroys you credit which would prevent you from financing anything, but i was wrong. I'm sure that they are paying higher interest rates though...

Well, credit cards will be higher and auto loans will be higher. Fortunately, I'm driving a 2004 Colorado, so I should be able to go a few years before buying another vehicle and it basically is pretty much gone from your credit record after 7 years. Most good banks will consider you for a mortgage after 3-4 years, provided you have a good letter or explanation and have shown some responsibility.

My greatest concern is the effect on my career. I work for a major bank right now in mortgage servicing delivery. This bank could care less what I do as far as bankruptcy, as my boss just filed following a divorce. However, I'm also working for not much over 30K and have around 36K in credit card debt. No student loans, thank goodness. I need a better job. I'm looking to move out west to get a better job, possibly in Phoenix or Las Vegas. Would love to do Los Angeles, but cannot tolerate that much traffic. Would love to do San Diego, but the job market doesn't seem to meet the cost of living for what I'm looking at.

Las Vegas seems to have some nice accounting positions. I just have a general business administration degree with just a few hours of accounting related courses, but perhaps they have something entry-level. Anyhow, those are the kind of jobs that may actually follow through with a credit check, not just a criminal background check and this could potentially fuck me.

see I have considered it myself and I have about 1/2 the debt you do. so I look forward to more info on this.
