Anyone here play guitar??

I can play some, acoustic and elec stuff, but I'm trying to develop some soloing skill. Looking for tips and advice plz.
 
Man, I was never very good, but would have liked to have been. I just kind of went at it on my own, but maybe there is a known method that produces faster results. I don't know. Google it!

Do you know how to read music?? Any theory??
Best thing is to start learning scales, all scales. Start with basics if you don't know them yet like your major, major 7th, minor, diminished, augmented then work up to pentatonic, diatonic etc. Scales are the basis for any "soloing".

In your spare time get a peice of paper and draw out a fret board and mark every note on the fret board. You should have your whole neck memorized and be able to slam a note on command in any octave.

So that's where you start. It's like Penis Enlargement or anything else, it's a lot of work but worth it. Me? I'm grade 10 certified Royal Conservatory of Music and played "B" circuit bars all over Alberta & Saskatchewan but never went all the way. Good luck man.

I've been strumming and picking at the guitar for years but lack of discipline and dedication has been my downfall to achieving the skill level I've desired (much like Penis Enlargement).

I've had a handful of lessons but never got alot out of them. Thirty mins once a week just did'nt cut it for me. I need to be in an enviroment of guitar players to pick up technique and knowledge. So I'm basically self taught from guitar mags. I don't read music but I have a basic understanding of the "language" and theory. I can understand tab.

My chording isn't too bad and I'm wanting to start being able to add some fills and simple lead work. I'm always reading from my guitar god influences about how important pentatonic scales are. So I've been practicing the "cookie cutter" patterns. Up and down, triplets, connecting them together and such, mostly in A and E. I'm not too concerned with speed yet, I'm following the rule of "speed is a by-product of accuracy". But my scales do not sound fluid, instead they are choppy and mathemactical.

So you say I should start with the major (mother of all scales). It seems so intimidating and impossible to learn all these scales. Does learning the scale position by repetition develop your "ear" so that you intuitivally (sic) know where the notes are?? I guess it must, it just seems like I never progress.

I'm trying to teach myself from "The Heavy Guitar Bible" but it loses me every now and then.

When did playing start to "click" for you?? Can you remember when the pieces started to fall together and what type of practice made it happen??
 
When I started to play my own way, not tabs, covers ect. At the point where my stuff was making my head bob up and down. I am thankful that I played my own style, now I have my OWN sound. Also, no matter what I hear I can play.
 
How much formal lessons/teaching did you have??

I know guys who swear they don't know what the hell they are playing theory wise but damn they make me jealous.

Does copying covers from tab help with development?
 
I have played the guitar for 7 years, going on 8. If you want to get better at playing, you have to practice. There is no way around it, practice is the number one thing that makes you a better guitarist. But what should you practice?

If you want to learn how to play solos, I suggest you find the tablature for some solos that you would like to learn how to play. You need to learn other people's material to develop your own sound until you get a feel for musical ideas. Scales and theory can be useful if you want to learn how to apply them properly.

Power tab is an excellent learning device. It uses tablature and midi files to guide you along through the learning process. It is much easier to learn that conventional tab.

I've been working on Crazy Train. Just bought the new GuitarWorld mag with the lessons cd. They show you how to play the song. I've learnt more in 30 mins of watching it over and over than I would have in 2 months on my own.

Do you have any links to any Power Tab stuff??
 
I would recommend Charanga Guitar Coach. I am using the electric one. It's really good. I have improved a lot since working through the excersizes. It has scales and stuff and gives you different ways to practice them. Theres videos, songs to play. It's not too advanced so if you are already good you won;t need it. The site is here:

You would be best looking for a 2nd hand copy on ebay to get it cheap.
 
I recomend playin with other people. I use to play for a band that opened for black label society in portland maine and was in the detroit scence when offspring was lurking. It's just easiest to hang out with other players and learn from them. Thanks about the system it pounds. so remember the guitar should pound fill a arena. maybe i'll put some sound files up.

Im a drummer, so I'm not much help in the guitar area, except I would also like to learn how to play my guitar better as well. Like I said, I am a drummer and have been for many years, but I have a nice BC Rich Mick 7 guitar that I wish I could play better.

Im gonna look into that power tab thing.

Don't do it, man! The only reason my buddy and I never got a band going was we could never find a drummer that would play with us losers. :) Seriously, for every kid that likes to drum there are 100 that decide to take up guitar. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me like mastering the drums is the way to get in a decent band.

I want to second this. I quit playing guitar much once I got to college, but the guys that could jam in college and actually knew and could read music all said that scales are the key to coming up with good solos. Alberta gave you some of the best advice you'll ever get on this, IMO.
