Blood in the semen (hemospermia)

The presence of blood in the semen is relatively rare, but if it happens it generates great alarm. It is usually a single episode, which is not associated with any other type of symptom, and most of the time it is due to a benign cause. However, in men over 40, up to 14% of cases are caused by prostate, testicular or other cancers.

The medical term for the presence of blood in the semen is hemospermia or hematospermia. It is important to distinguish this type of bleeding from that which produces a frenulum break, a glans lesion or bleeding from the partner (from menstruation for example). Once it is confirmed that the blood is coming from the semen, you should seek medical help. It is not an emergency, but don't delay your appointment with your urologist either
