Hey, guys I can't decide if I should cut my hair or leave it alone. As of right now I usually wear it in a ponytail, but when out in public I wear a baseball cap to hide my hair.

I have the kind of hair that is wild and hard to maintain. I mean my hair is very curly and thick and frizzes up a lot.

Now last week I did go to the barber shop but the lady told me I should keep my hair long because it is easier to maintain. She said if I did cut my hair it would end up looking like a afro once it starts to grow back out again.

To be honest I am tired of wearing a baseball cap out in public. Plus I want to look decent for the ladys.

To be honest I really don't know if I want to cut it because it took some time to get it where it's at now. This January should be a year of hair growth for me. And, plus I hate getting hair cuts because every hair cut I have had has been shitty.

What do you guys think and has anyone had this type of curly hair?

Personally i would say keep it, i at one point had my hair down to the middle of my back, i had to cut it for a job and i regretted it. Hair takes so long to grow that long and there are so many in-between stages that its practically unmanageable thus the reason i haven't grown it back out. What ever you decide do it based off what you want if you want to have short hair be prepared for the time and management that requires as with curly hair it can be just as much work if not more than longer hair.

Some like long hair. Might try getting it styled? Then again, doing something crazy to you like a very short cut might be liberating. You could donate the hair. That's a big panty dropper. "Omg, you donate to "Locks of Love"? You're so sweet!"

I rock it both ways. I rock the long hair in the winter and the short hair in summer. Funny, I was just thinking that I need a haircut:)

Another thing I stopped doing is dying my hair. Now I am a silver fox :)

As I don't know how you look, it's difficult to say!

It can be liberating to have a short cut style, but then again that usually needs maintaining once a month or so. (One thing to learn is to trim the back of your neck by yourself, that will save some time before you need to see a barber or a stylist ...)

I'm also at a spot where I'm thinking what to do with my hair. Personally I feel it's too long at the moment and it being curly, well, that's another issue.
I also thought my hair would go afro-like a long time ago when I had very long hair. (Past my shoulder blades, think of David Coverdale in the 80's ;) )
But no, it didn't when I eventually got a very short cut. But I like my hair medium-long or so as my curls can be tight; many barbers have cut it too short and it looks stupid!

So, anyhow, if your hair is "African-American" curly, then some length definitely is fine. But wearing a ponytail or hiding under a cap, I would consider a cut.
There are many good products to tame the frizziness and ease the styling. I've tried many and Shea Butter as of late has worked quite well for me! For curly hair oily products can work out well too. But it's good to look for a non-comedogenic oil, I've had some issues with coconut oil for example. (Can clog the pore and you can get a painful "cyst.")

It's a good idea to search for curly hair styles online. Many of them may need some oils or creams to maintain, but not that much always.
I call a little bit of bullshit on that "longer hair easier to maintain" as I felt personally offended when I had longer hair and this one woman said "oh, long curly hair, must be just wash and go!"
Nope, it wasn't; I spent a good amount of time than just wash and go to have good looking hair. (OK, I spent way too much time on my looks in my teenage years! ;) )

Oh yes, facial features also matter when it comes to the length of your hair. Some can rock the longer style but for some people it really makes the looks departments worse.

I would possibly ask few other stylists. I liked the SWM's idea about donating the hair (if it is that long!), that would be cool.

:) I look like many people, if you look through the many Youtube videos you will see like 40 versions of me! :) I change my look so often!
