zero carbs at breakfast=immediate fat burning?

ive read threads about exercising before breakfast and have actually practised this myself with pleasing results... im going to try and pose this question in laymens terms............

now apparently while sleeping our body uses up all of our energy sources derived from food i.e carbohydrates and when we wake and eat the body will then use this food as an energy source as opposed to burning into the fat cells....

i totally understand the concept of excersing before breakfast so as to immediately start using the fat cells as energy but how would it effect me for example if i awoke and ate a zero carb breakfast at say 9am and then ate again at 1pm a meal consisiting of carbs.............. would this meen that i had 4 hours between 9am and 1pm of energy being taken from the fat cells due to no carbs being consumed ?

hope you can advise

regards

Your body will try to make up for its deficit in glucose by converting the protein and fat you consume at breakfast into glucose, along with stored bodyfat (as long as the overall calories you consume at breakfast do not exceed what your body requires). So this means if you are trying to build muscle, keep in mind that a good portion of the protein you consume is being converted into glucose instead of being used to repair/build muscle. The advantage to having protein/fat converted in glucose opposed to simply consuming carbohydrates is that you do not have nearly the same insulin response, which means that fat-storing mechanisms are about shut off completely, and fat-burning is increased. The disadvantage to such a low insulin level is that anabolism is also about shut off and you will see very little muscle gain. Insulin is very anabolic to muscle cells as well as fat cells, so as long as you are training hard with weights, the anabolism will favor muscle building over fat-gain, whereas if you were a couch potato, the anabolism would favor fat-gain.

Instead of watching how many carbs you eat at breakfast, watch how many carbs you consume over the course of the day. If you would like to have a zero carb breakfast, that's fine, but keep carbs low throughout the rest of the day as well (except around the time that you lift weights).

thanks for the informative reply

im mainly going for weight loss at the moment and was just wondering if having a zero carb breakfast would have the same effect on fat burning as it would for no breakfast until after cardio

thanks ;)

same effect? no. You will likely lose less fat (as some of the calories consumed will be burned for fuel) but you will also likely lose less lean body mass as well.

I'd stear well clear of training before breakfast, unless its out of neccesaty (its the only time you can train).

You dont want your body to ever have to rely on gettin energy from fat stores (which is the goal of this type of training). Short term you will get benifits, but long term your body will learn that it needs to store fat for the upcoming exercise.

Fat lose is so simple to get to grips with, incorporating it into your life is hard.

You wanna eat 6 smaller meals a day.
Drink gallons of water.
Eat healthy... eat as much fruit, veg and meat as you can (try not eat anything else - but of course, you will)
Lift tonnes of weights, not only is it great exercise but more muscle = a higher metabolic rate. Simply put your new muscle requiers energy just to sit on your frame, this extra muscle will help consume some of the extra energy you are obviously ingesting.
Do lots of vaired exercise, if you are separating your "cardio" from your "resistance" training (and I would advise that you dont) do your weights first.

Peace

thanks guys

i stick to a very healthy diet and i walk and cycle every day,the only problem i have is the dreaded beer problem ... when i say problem i tend to lose a couple of pounds then have a couple of days on the beer and like magic on goes 2 pounds !

i just wish there was a way around this without giving up the booze

thanks

Why do you suggest this? If you want to stay away from losing lean muscle mass for energy, I've heard its best to keep at least 2 hours between weight training and cardio....but then again I keep them together because of time.

Well weight training should execute very good form. Having more energy (at the start of your work out) is useful. Also, everyone should be incorperating some elements of olympic lifting. If you are doing this it is always better to be fresh.

I've said it a million times before, but you just cant beat the crossfit.com mentality. It's the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MOS[/words] of conditioning.

Peace
