Just use a fake ruler that says it's 12" but is really 9". That's what's always worked for me. You clowns don't even realize I'm really still at 7" mwahaha...

Seriously, flexible for girth and rigid for length. I like wood so it's easy to remove the empty space before 0 and you can work the edge so it's not sharp like plastic or metal might be.

The best ruler to use is a wooden ruler. You can sand down the base of the ruler, rounding it for a comfortable bone press. Also, remember, there are usually .25" of extra length on a wooden ruler, be sure to sand down to the exact starting point.
