UFC 60 : Gracie vs. Hughes

Just finished up watchin UFC 60, big fight between the legend Royce Gracie and Matt Hughes turned out to be a domination from Hughes. I kinda figured that cuz the new school of MMA fighters are great all around, those older guys seemed to have one skill to use, like Gracie being a suBathmateission fighter. Funny thing is, Hughes totally owned Gracie on the ground and the fight was stopped near the end of the 1st because Matt was on top of Gracie's back, just pounding him with shots.

Lookin forward to next one, UFC 61, Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock and Andrei Arlovsky vs Tim Sylvia again.

I watched it as well. Kind of sad to see Gracie lose but I wasn't totally surprised.

Hope Royce does'nt become like Tyson and become a joke in the end.

I really wanted Royce to win with a classic triangle choke as I can't stand Hughes and wanted to see the Brazillian on top again.

Whoever though Royce would win should wake up....fighting is contantly evolving and getting better. Thats what the gracies get for keeping secrets. The books suck and so does gracie Bjj....Eddie bravo should be in that ring...with practice.

Thats how I feel, with boxing too. Everyone always talking about how the old timers were the best and stuff, no way, people evolve, learn new things, get stronger, smarter, better fighters.

Gracie got beat up pretty badly, and he was almost caught with some kind of arm lock. The fight was stopped moments later in an excellent show case of ground and pound!

I think that was one of the worst bet downs I've seen, did you see Shamrock's face when it was over ?

I think Ortiz is to athletic for him, and a repeat is probably what will happen, although Shamrock seems pretty darn strong, a KO can go either way when they let their hands GO!

You guys should see the whining on the MMA forums. I just took a peak last night (I don't belong to any) and the lamenting was pathetic.

First, how can any true fight fan not love Matt Hughes. The guy is confident but not arrogant. Even if he is, he backs it up like no one else has even begun to do so. He doesn't have some cheesy nickname, but simply fights as "Matt Hughes". All these guys on the MMA forums were bitching about the guy when he represents everything the sport should be. I question whether such people are true fans, or just people that love seeing someone get hurt.

Second, Royce Gracie was always a dickhead, to an extent. I totally respect what Royce has done for the sport and acknowledge him as a great competitor that changed MMA, for the better, forever. I have just seen numerous fights where someone is tapping out and he puts additional pressure on the hold before letting go. I saw one piece of footage where it looked like Royce's opponent tapped and he went ahead and snapped the guy's arm. I have heard this complaint from two people I've met that have fought against guys trained in Brazil by the Gracie family. "Brazilians are dickheads" said one. Royce seems like a nice enough guy and the UFC would not be what it is today, but I just can't respect his poor sense of sportsmanship and in this day and age, I am pleased enough to see him lose.

Third, let's be honest about Royce Gracie and his accomplishments. They were great and changed the game forever, but they did not prove Gracie Ju-Jitsu to be superior to another other fighting method. They proved Ju-Jitsu to be superior to most any other martial arts discipline. Make no mistake about it, everyone Royce fought in the early days was very one-dimensional. Some were strikers and some would wrestlers, but everyone was fixed on their system. No one discipline will last against the well-rounded fighters of today. To me, Royce proved that ju-jitsu is probably the most important aspect to be trained in, but no one would make it today just by focusing on one thing.

YES.

The main issues is the gracie family never moved on....after Jiu-Jitsu.

They were so confident in their own GRACIE style, that they never bothered to crosstrain with the energy that a lot do now.

RICKSON is a good fighter, i believe. He seemed to crosstrain more than the others.

Despite popular belief, the fall of the gracie family started way back with Sakuraba.

Those were a couple of nasty knockouts, both from the lightweight division which is unbelieveable.

Royce looked so skinny compared to Hughes rofl Deep down I wanted the Brazilian to win but knew in my head that Hughes would beat him. Gracie was a legend back in the early days of the UFC with it's one dimensional fighters but the sport has evolved and so have the athletes. It was strange watching Royce fight without his gi.

I thought it was awesome. I mean the Hughes vs. Gracie fight didn't last too long, but I thought the two brutal lightweight fights were awesome to see and I would put it up there with one of the better UFC events in recent years. However, I watched it at a friend's house and he actually paid for it. That's what happens when I have a 27" TV and he has a 50" TV.
