More chat idea

okay, well i have been makin a chat that can access irc with out the irc program.

anyway, i have another idea. if putting a small frame under the site forum with a automatic chat. i might be able to help.

so DLD, contact maybe JAZ and ask him if he wants to try it out..

this would of course require java enable. and it is a small frame that can be enlarged by dragging it up to chat to those who ever goes to the forum.

any other ideas, or interested? let me know

yeah, its a great idea.like a shoutbox or similar is what im picturing.please no java though, ive seen alot better and more efficient chatrooms without it.plus i can see people bitching about all that loading up when they visit the forums.something similar to a shoutbox would be great though, ive seen them integrated on many different forums.just my $0.02:)

Java is so much more capable than any server or client side scripting though. Could you post links to some better ones you've seen?

im not so sure about that as ive seen many advanced php chatrooms with sql databases that seemed to do the job just nicely.no big deal anyway,as i kinda prefer irc to any of it and would just fire up my fav irc client.still,i think a shoutbox would be nice to allow people to converse quickly right below the forums, probably would be abused, who knows :)

I think the main problem with chat is that we need a list of on-line users currently in chat. Without that no one knows and in essence no one goes.

I'll have a think about this. It might be easier to write a custom solution.. or at least a PHP script that will access the IRC channel and check who's online.

Looks good. What does DLD (and everyone else) think about a split window solution?

If there's enough demand, I can write something to display who's online.

I've always like chats. Like DLD has said though, we should be able to see who's in there. Most guys just wont check to see if they dont know.

Here's how the online list would work:

A small application would run on the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MoS[/words] server and stay permanently connected to the IRC channel. A PHP script (or snippet) could be added into vBulletin to query this application for a list of users each time a [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MoS[/words] page is viewed.

The reason for the seperate app is that otherwise the PHP snippet would have to login to the IRC channel each time a page was viewed. This would cause horrendous spamming of the channel, which would make it unusable.

Techy information.. if it's possible (and wanted), I'll do it.

Actually, it turns out I should have done my research first. The IRC protocol allows for a nickname list query without actually joining the channel, so the solution can be purely PHP. Gimme a day or two, and I'll set up a demo.

Turns out the query won't actually work without being in the channel.. so, I've written a program to sit in the channel and provide a webservice to list the users. A PHP snippet comes with it, and is very small and simple.

Only one thing - the program is Windows based, and the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MoS[/words] server isn't. Do you guys have an alternative Windows server the program could be put on?
